Musicians you idolised as a teen who turned out to be dickheads

I can't listen to musicians who I hate the politics or personal lives of. I mean, just plain arseholes can be fine, but domestic violence? No.

I wouldn't say those tunes have been written out of history. I was at a gig not long ago (Giuda) and a few of his tunes were played beforehand. And I heard a colleague at work humming "D'ya Wanna be in my Gang" the other day. Hmmm, slightly dodgy, I thought on both occasions.

You hear him humming it when you're nearby?
I'd be a bit worried about what he thinks of you, Chick!!! :D

Lets also mention Jon Lennon here- profound as fuck when you knew no different, but on reflection an arrogant twat who thought the defeat of capital could be realised by not getting out of bed for a few days. I've had some epic lie-ins in my time and yet capital remains

John Lennon is the one that springs to mind. I thought he was some great hero in my late teens/early 20s. Later on, which I became supposedly wiser, it occurred to me that if he hadn't been martyred murdered, he would have become just as hated as the likes of Bono and Geldof are today.

Also, he battered his first wife (and then cheated on her with Yoko Ono), and knocked about his supposed friend so severely it may have led to the friend's death from a brain haemorrhage some years later.

My friend told me that he has gone off Iron Maiden when he found out that Bruce Dickinson is a Tory.

Bryan Ferry: Tory twat and Nazi idoliser.
I never liked him. Even though I'm around the same age as him I always thought he was more my mum's sort of artist than mine. I loathed him in interviews as he was such a creep as well as a Tory twat.
Just recently though, I quite like some of his early stuff :facepalm:

I like musicians for their music. Why care what nonsense they spout about other things? Expecting all your media favourites to have a complete, cohesive and fully vetted set of opinions on everything is an annoying modern phenomenon. I wouldn't choose politicians based on their musical skills, or sportspeople on their charm.

Who expects them to have a "complete, cohesive and fully vetted set of opinions on everything"? What I expect from public figures is a bit of circumspection about their prejudices. It's not a lot to ask.

I loved Ginger out of the Wildhearts as a teenager, and a few years later came across an email address for him. So i emailed him a question, and got a really surprisingly vehement, nasty, aggressive and expletive filled reply from him.

I wrote him off as a dick then, but have since found out he was a crack addict at that point, and I guess I may just have caught him on a bad day. He now seems to be a really nice chap from what he says and does online, so I've taken him off my dickhead list.

Jarvis Cocker seemed like a dickhead when I met him too, but then I never liked him anyway, so guess that doesn't count.

I never really idolised him if truth be told, but I used to love Roxy Music and I wasn't aware of the extend of his twattishness then. Eno seems alright though (despite his support for the LibDems).

I remember being a bit disappointed by Public Enemy being a bunch of racist cunts

You mean "Professor" Griff? The guy was a talentless no-mark who bought Farrakhan wholesale. As for the rest of P.E. they didn't endorse Farrakhan personally, but they thought that organisations like N.O.I. were worthwhile for black self-respect. So what? Hardly makes all of 'em racist, just Griff.

did bruce dickenson not become a born again xtian at some point?

- kinda went weird on napalm death when getting told a story about shane emberry crying to women from the crowd brought backstage after the gig about that nobody took them seriously as a band anymore becaues they were old...

Bedroom wall covered in gary Glitter posters :(...I was younger than a teen, but that makes it worse not better :(:(

Well you weren't to know and he was a fun performer.

I liked Adam Ant ,but, he has had some mental health issues so I guess its not really his fault.

Professor Griff hates Jews
Chuck D was always namechecking Farrakhan

They loved all that Nation of Islam we are the supreme race shite

So, as black artists who support some of the socially-motivated the ideals of the Nation of Islam (self-reliance, sobriety, respect for yourself and others), they should have to renounce any aspect of the N.O.I. that you don't like?
