i try to justify the david ruffin thing by thinking "oh well, he's only the vocalist, at least he doesn't write the stuff", plus, he was seriously fucked in the head, had massive drug problems and had a seriously fucked up background. all this comes through in his voice, yet it's still one of the sweetest, most beautiful and moving sounds made by a man.

also, the temptations were more than one person, does that mean i have to dismiss the vocals of the others, and all the musicians, including my favourite bass player on occasion, because of the mental problems of the lead singer?

Loads of people don't have any problem with it. You get loads of anti-nazi punks listening to Skrewdriver for example, and non-political/sound metallers listening to Burzum. Personally, I don't have a problem with people who can listen to that stuff but don't agree with the politics. I just can't do it myself. I would be extremely annoyed if I found out that any of my friends had ever spent money on either of those bands. There are some metal bands I do enjoy, but I'd be wary of spending money on them, even though they've never come out as officially dodgy.

What I mean is, not being about to listen to band that actually says unpleasant things in their lyrics and not being able to listen to a band because of something you know about the musician's personal life are not the exact same thing. Someone might be able to do one but not the other.

I like musicians for their music. Why care what nonsense they spout about other things? Expecting all your media favourites to have a complete, cohesive and fully vetted set of opinions on everything is an annoying modern phenomenon. I wouldn't choose politicians based on their musical skills, or sportspeople on their charm.

Anyway, they don't have to have the same opinion as me on everything. I've already said they can even be arseholes. Just not racists or wifebeaters or anything else along those lines.
