BBC news channel continues to mention the '16 armed gangs' stuff occasionally, although there is now a slight suggestion that maybe some of the hostages arent being held hostage, so much as are hiding in fear in different parts of the hotels. It also seems that whilst police and officials have been the source for some of the hostage info, this info is now getting old and as far as I know there havent been many fresh official statements about the reality of the situation.

I think elbows' cautious approach is right -- seems like we've been getting near-continunous newsfeed of a mixture of confirmed stuff, semi-confirmed stuff and 'unconfirmed reports' (some of those probably speculation, in part -- totally understandable too, when events are moving so fast)
It's obvious now that hellish stuff is kicking off there, but we can only hope that some of the more extreme/horrific stories turn out to be exaggerated ....

For what it's worth, I had the same doubts you did about Johnny's comments.
But was able to give him the benefit of the doubt.
And not jump to conclusions.
Whilst, at the same time, asking him to confirm that he had no intention to provoke.

What on earth is that on wikipedia now for, no one yet knows what exactly is happening.
btw, i had just come out the cinema after watching the crazy and prolonged violence of the Baader Meinhof Gang in the eponomously titled movie, then see this on TV, I wonder if they, the terroists have the same personalities, motivations, backgrounds, etc, (eg educated, bourgeois)
The other thing, aren't these attacks the sort of dreadful things that were happening in Iraq more or less every day for years.
