Mumbai: coordinated terrorist attacks, westerners targetted

If the Taj Dome collapses it will have a similar symbolic importancxe for Indians as the WTC did for Americans.

Its a beautiful building the Taj, one of the best known in India. It was built by a Parsee industrialist after he'd been refused entry to a white hotel.

Taj stairwell is full of dead bodies (NDTV live feed) :(

there's a DFAT emergency number if you're trying to find people in Mumbai: 1300 555 135

got this from another forum too
Chairman of Hindustan Unilever, CEO of Nitin Paranjpe among those trapped by terrorists in Mumbai's Oberoi hotel.

Indiatimes reporting attacks took place at Santa Cruz airport as well as Oberoi, Taj, VT, etc. Almost 1000 casualties.(not all dead)

more forum specualtion now says

100+ hostages rescued from hotel amid clashes between terorrists and anti-terror commandos.

apparently the Taj has been cleared,so gawd knows what my above post is refering to. Lots of speculation, but sticking to the facts is soooo last year. ;)

"It was not immediately clear what triggered the [Taj hotel] fire, which became visible after television footage showed what appeared to be some of the hostages being shepherded out of the building."

My auntie Margaret got my cousins Saroj and Anita by text on their mobiles an hour or so ago in Mumbai. She couldn't place a mobile voice call though. Go for low bandwidth mobile comms if anyone needs to get in touch with anyone - email or text.

Good advice there - and glad your family are ok.

Mrs Untethered has worked in Mumbai and stayed at the Taj. Not there at the moment, fortunately.

Horrible situation.

It's quite a shocking act of organized attacks and those photos on Flickr capture a real sense of chaos in the air. I can't imagine what must be going through people's minds there at the moment.

I just hope there is a speedy and peacful solution to any hostage situations that are going on and no more lives are lost. :(
