He didn't have the easiest time of being Viceroy. He made cock ups but it could have been worse and it could have been better.

I'm not sure that I entirely buy that: the British have used partition as an expedient means of settling disputes that they caused through divide and conquer tactics. Northern Ireland and the Middle East are useful examples.
