If you have an argument to make against game shooting in general, make it. Don't piss about concerning tail docking and rough ground.
Re tail docking, I'm absolutely against it as a routine part of any breed. As regards working dogs, I don't have enough information to make a decision either way. From what I can gather, the vote was engendered by those using working gun dogs, where dogs had sustained tail injuries in thick cover.
There is one problem though, not every dog that is bred as a working dog turns out to be so, many are gun shy, others simply won't retrieve. Quite how you can decide which dogs will be successful gun dogs as puppies, I doubt if anyone knows.
Sas makes a good point about not knowing what dogs will be good gun dogs. We had a German Wirehaired Pointer whose old man was a cracking gun dog (Basco Von Andersheim was his name. Brilliant.) Luke fucking hated guns and if you so much as brought one near him he would go for you. A breed not noted for their overt friendliness but taught me to respect dogs.
