Movements/subcultures that only exist cos of the Web

Cloo

Banana for scale
The only example I can think of off the top of my head is Furries - I dare say people who now call themselves 'furries' existed before the Internet, but I can't imagine they had anything like a very coherent network before it.

It seems to now include a large variety of people from people who actually have a sexual thing about dressing up as animals to people who either have an imaginary 'animal persona' online and/or like to write stories about animals/fantasy creatures, as far as I can tell from communities like this . I do find it fascinating to look through sites of 'web cultures' like this.

Could furries exist without the web? What other examples are there of groups that have been created/become coherent apparently through the Internet? I guess quite a lot of them might, sadly, be rather dodgy...

like 'doggers' for instance.

What about that craze where everyone just turns up at an arranged place, which has been posted on a site then disperses (I don't mean OCB ;) ) sorry brain death, means I can't remeber the name for it.

They did it in Times Square in New York, I think.

Flash Mobs. :)

flashmob - wacky city types playing at situationism-lite and then pegging it to go rah!rah!rah! in some local wine bar.

Furries have been around as a subculture before t3h interweb. So have adult babies, and all sorts of other wierd and wacky fetishes.

adult babies

One of my friends has been pressing me to set up a nursery for adult babies...

I would be tempted, if I was single/lived on my own.

Mind you, I wouldn't be cleaning up no babies bums!!

eeewwww

cleaning real babies bums is not an attractive thought, but the idea of cleaning up after some middle aged banker in a nappy.....

I saw a woman on a documentary who did this and she had been a nurse for years before, so was used to changing adult's nappies. Couldn't pay me enough to even contemplate it

Yeah, but I think the web has expanded it from just a fetish to also include, as I said, people who just like writing stories about animals or creating for themselves animal 'alter-egos'.

i think fanfiction as a whole has got a huge boost from the internet ...

i mean go look at fanfiction.net 14331 stories for cardcaptor sakura ALONE!

i waste my life reading fanfiction .... especially Eva fanfics

i'll kill anyone who calls me a furry (unless i like you)

I'd forgotten about fan fiction... certainly enabled by the net (even if it did exist in a form previously). Very amusing stuff a lot of the time, although a tad disturbing sometimes.

i'm a big fan of Shinji x Rei Evangelion Fanfic ... though i don't mind a good Shinji x Misato or Maya

i'm trying to find some good kenshin stuff

ohhh i just remebered i have to check on a really cool Eva Ranma crossover ... they may have posted a new chapter
