May Day 2021

Happy May day :)

The disconnect between the aspirational values in the chairman's speech and the reality of working lives for most Chinese people was as egregious as usual this year, with that extra level because in some sense they believe their own hype.

Watch this, though, and for a few minutes you can believe that it will all be OK in the end (and at least it's better than Billy Bragg's version):

Spoke to my Dad yesterday, who told me about what they used to have to do on May Day when he was a boy in Czechoslovakia in the 50s. They all dressed up in little uniforms with shorts and a red neckscarf (obligatory youth org called The Pioneers) to spend the day marching about in formation saluting their rulers and then doing things like picking rubbish off the streets. He didn't remember it very fondly.

i know may day has passed but this is worth seeing anyhow - from facebook

Despite everything...
There's something so moving about this photograph of the remnants of the Jewish Workers Bund marching on Mayday in Poland after the war. Most of their members had been killed by the Nazis and their local helpers, their leadership murdered by the Soviets.
A handful of Bundists later made their way to London including the late Esther Brunstein and Majer Bogdanski, both originally from Lodz, where they had been active in the Bund's youth group SKIF, in Esther's case, and the Bund. Esther and Majer became well known in London in Yiddish circles and in socialist groups, including the Jewish Socialists' Group.
Esther was an actor in the Yiddish theatre and Majer a tailor.
Esther and Majer spoke in Nottingham at the Anne Frank events in 2004 and 1989 respectively.
Photograph reprinted from the Facebook site of the Jewish Labour Bund in Melbourne.
