Marble Arch is going to get a hill and it's going to be called The Mound

You can see the view here.

It's mainly treetops. It would be hard to spend more than 15 minutes there as there's really not a lot to do or look at and you're not encouraged to tarry at the uninspiring viewing platform.

I went on a guided walk of Hyde Park this morning. We met at Speakers Corner, not far from the mound. The walk guide said he's been up it and highly recommended it for its specular, birds-eye, views of ... the Foot Locker shop. Got a round of groans and bitter laughs at that.

Hampstead Heath has great views /north Londoner.

An installation with views over Hyde park and the surrounding area would be pretty cool, I have to admit. It's just unfortunate that this er... doesn't. Measure twice, spend £6m on scaffolding once.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic struck I've been working in central London (With a few months in Hertfordshire) and over the last couple of months the the number
of people in and around Marble Arch / Oxford street has been back close to 'normal' times.

People were going to come back to the area regardless of this debarcle.

Every day I walk to and from work and see people sleeping on the streets.

£6 million? Some one else on this thread mentioned how this could help the homeless.

Fuck the Tories.

I thought it was flats now? Mlle Fire used to run the members club on the top 2 floors before the landlord kicked everyone out and started converting it to flats. Seen some cool sunrises from up there.

Be good if he has reinstated the viewing balcony though.

Iirc, you had to go all the way to street level if you wanted a smoke.

Ah ok, it's been a while since I went there. That's a bit rubbish.

There are still other places though. You can go to the Shard or the Tate Modern viewing platform or the silly one by Liverpool Street.

The Sky Garden? It's not silly, it's genuinely lovely. The greenery inside does actually make it feel garden-like, as much as anywhere inside can be, and you can go outside onto the terraces and get fantastic views. And it is free.

The Shard is one of the worst value-for-money tourists traps I've ever been to, and that's from someone who (for work) has been to Madame Tussauds multiple times.

Went past it this afternoon and there were actually people going in, and they were having their bags searched. What kind of idiotic suicide bomber would blow themselves up on the top of the Mound? Mate you need to pick your targets a bit.

It's still shit:

Meanwhile, entry fees will come back on 1 September and the mound is due to remain until January. At the time of writing, the ticketing page on its website shows “excellent availability” for every timeslot after charging starts. It doesn’t seem likely that some extra growth on the trees will be enough to salvage the project.

The designer, maybe? Or the council planner who approved it?

If they time it well there won't even be anyone else there blow up, just them and the mound.

A big chunk of costs must be the big team of security they have. Must have been around 10 people working there when I visited.

If they were to keep it open weekend only that would surely save a big chunk of the costs.

I saw a You Tube video tonight about it (Jago Hazzard) I actually thought it looked quite good for about two seconds till they showed the sides, the steps a d the appalling view. God the whole thing looked shit. Glad I watched it as I had half a mind to wander down next time I’m in town but know will save the shoe leather…

ETA - here is the video…
