I've not been to Abruzzo, but I have been to Italy. Last time I was there, the owner of the self catering place we stayed in (he lived next door) was telling us that basically the whole town had had the foundations of the houses dug out and the houses balanced on large ball-bearings as an earthquake precaution, so that they'd move with minor quakes. Now, his English was very good but I wondered if he'd translated something wrong. Because that sounds like a huge undertaking. Anyway, I've often thought about that. Houses on ball bearings.
Sad to hear of the deaths in this latest disaster.
