Mac Vs PC (2022 edition)

Except you can, using Parallels.
You prompted me to go back and look at why I'd got the impression it wasn't possible.

As I understand it, you can use parallels but then you have to use "Windows 10 ARM preview" through a possibly slightly convoluted process.

Then you can run apps that will run on that version of Windows. The application I wanted to use, doesn't seem to, and that's why I'd written it off. I don't know if it's the case that most applications will be fine, and mine happens to be one of a minority that isn't.

As I don't really know anything about Windows, I'm not even sure what "Windows 10 ARM preview" is or what its purpose is - is there a long term intention to make Windows able to run on ARM processors?

Thanks, nice to hear from someone who has at least used PC Specialist, so that was kind of important input, also useful to know they've been around far longer than I thought, so maybe won't vanish overnight at no notice.
My PC is from them, it has been superb, A friend also bought from them, he is happy with the machine,

afaik you can run Win11 in Parallels.

win10 too.

Drill down into the small print and yeah, still no intel Windows on M1 macs. ARM windows only (which is next to useless)
I don't know enough about windows to understand the extent of the limitations of ARM windows - but the Parallels website definitely buries the info deep in the small print and to me it's basically misleading advertising. If I'd started out my investigations looking at the Parallels website, I might very likely have gone ahead and bought it, understanding that it would give me a fully functional version of windows on my M1 mac.

Depends on what video editing software you’re using. Most rely on the CPU (with rendering boosts from the GPU) but Davinci Resolve is more GPU intensive. And when it comes to GPUs, NVidia is king.

Bit the bullet. Picking an MBP up today.

If you don't want to wait for delivery, you can use this script and have it check local stock every minute.

There's been none in stock for days. 1 appeared today, and within a minute it was mine! ;)

What spec etc did you go for?

Have an iphone and ipad pro but I wouldn't have a Macbook as it's impractical if you're off grid, which I am. In the boating group I admin, countless liveaboards have destroyed their Macbook pros with 12v adaptors, they use SO much power and cane your batteries. I'm onto my third Yoga Pro. The other two I had are still in perfect working order but Adobe doesn't work on them anymore - El Jugs is still using my old one and the one before (must be about 8 years old?) - I'm not joking he used it every day for at least 10 hours and it's still in perfect working order. Because I live onboard and space is limited, I use the laptop in tent mode on a shelf with a keyboard when I'm onboard. Instead of having a seperate monitor. Or use it on a desk in the same mode raised up on books or a yoga block - again with a keyboard - to save my back. We also use it like that to watch movies in our front cabin. The downside is they're more expensive to buy than Macs but I paid for this one over six months interest free, so it was ok. Have absolutely no complaints about build quality, we used to buy Sony or Asus laptops but they were replaced because they broke, none of our yoga laptops ever have.
The most annoying thing is tethering my iphone to a pc laptop to access the internet, I have to connect it with a cable - what bullshit. I have no issues with icloud syncing at all though, it works, although for the photos I lose the file structure, can't see my albums, just the main stream.
I don't do any 3D design - yet - but I'm seeing a gradual shift in my trade from Macs to pcs because of 3D, never thought I'd see that happen tbh.

Whilst this wont have any immediate impact, this is an interesting development. Intel’s fightback you assume starts now in an attempt to stop those huge fans kicking in the moment you do anything slightly intensive. It will be interesting what sort of NDAs he’s had to agree too.

The base model 14". From the video reviews I've seen it should be more than good enough for what I need. He says.

The other thing for me that is gold is the touchscreen and integrated stylus. I’m editing masks in Photoshop today - no need for a tablet and stylus. I guess Apple expects that we will use our ipad pros instead - which I do, but Photoshop is very stripped down for ipad and you can’t do much with it.

I'm always a bit baffled why so many people seem to do everything on a laptop, especially stuff like Photoshop work. Even with an external keyboard it's still a tiny screen. I'd find it so claustrophobic. But I've got used to working with three monitors.

Well in my case I can disconnect the 3 monitors I have plugged in and take it somewhere else and use the monitor that's built into it there.

I have to compromise because I couldn't run monitors without destroying my batteries. This time of year, especially, but I work on product that fits ok on the screen and it's all I've known for years. Now I'm
a part time carer for my father even moreso, my office fits in a bag. I'm with him now, working sat on the sofa with the laptop in tablet mode, editing in Photoshop with the stylus. Altho I'm currently experiementing with mirroring onto their big tv screen.

I can't imagine owning a laptop that doesn't have a touchscreen and can't be flipped into tablet mode!

This basically. Will have a dual screen monitor setup upstairs. Recording tons of 4K video content portability becomes king. Plus sometimes I just wanna chill in front of the tv and let it do it’s thing.

I can feel a PC upgrade coming on, despite Elder Scrolls VI not even being on the horizon yet.

I love my iPhone and iPad but couldn't imagine swapping my PC for anything else in a million years.

The micro-fibre cloth is out the minute I see the tiniest speck of dust on my monitor, a touchscreen would trigger my ocd constantly.
Are you like that with your phone as well?

It's really quite overstated - my laptop only needs the occasional wipe.

What I mean is people that just use the laptop as is, for everything, without any external displays.

As far as I can see, the idea of a "desktop" computer is probably going to gradually disappear for mainstream use, and the norm will become more like a portable element like a laptop or tablet, that connects in to a dock with external monitors etc to provide a proper workstation when you're not on the road.

Docks have been around for decades but this hasn't happened. Meanwhile the cloud has come along meaning it shouldn't be necessary to carry your life's work around on a big lump of hardware any more.

I have a longing to play some games so think I may try picking up a Windows machine sometime. I wrecked my '00s MBP playing Civ V.

What's changed though is the size of the computing hardware and more recently the amount of cooling it needs, as demonstrated most recently by the Apple M1 chips. It's now much more possible to do stuff like 3d work or video editing on a laptop or even a tablet-like device.

I understand there's some idea that processing can move to the cloud too (I mean in real time, not sending something off to get rendered on a server and sent back to you shortly afterwards). I dunno how far away that is, but it would obviously change everything.
