I went to Manze's on Chapel Street market as they close down for good in March and I've never been. Double pie, mash and liquor.
Pretty good, but I can see why the modern foody crowd don't go. It's proper old school, no frills. Not an artisan curated dish in sight. I love the way they scrape the mash onto the side of the plate.
Ooh do you know why they're closing, ringo? They recently opened a branch in the town where I live and it's one of the few nice looking places here Hope they're not going bust.
Chicken & veg pesto pasta thing and a big bag of salad (eaten with a fork today, coz there were people nearby and I didn't want salady fingers on my laptop)
Need to get out of this habit of buying readymeals on a Friday and start bringing lunch in again

I just don't think they appeal to young people. It's an old fashioned version of it and looks cheap and perhaps even working class rather than aspirational. The pastry isn't light and airy, it's dense and heavy. The ingredients are cheap, not locally sourced, seasonal and foraged. The mash is heavy, lumpy and slapped onto the plate like old school dinners.
Shame, because that misses the point that it's fast and cheap and filling. They lasted so long because they're satisfying. There's very little choice and no waited tables but that means it's ready to go, you walk in and you've got your plate in your hand inside a minute. It's almost a street food in that respect.
I think we'll miss them when they've gone and they'll get revived and reinvented in 20 years when nostalgia kicks in and someone remembers they can be made up in advance and kept warm for quick service.
Ready salted crisps and a mini bag of animal biscuits. Really struggling to eat this week and had to force myself to eat the crisps because it hurt. Didn’t have the energy to make toast so that was the best savoury option.
