Legowelt - bit good

ska invita

back on the other side
I think he deserves his own thread...several times now Ive heard a tune and thought Who The Hell Is This, and it turns out its Legowelt.

Heard Josie Rebelle play this this morning

I notice it comes from something called Amiga Railroad Adventures and that there is also this on youtube

Anyone know about this Amiga stuff? Is it all on oldskool equipment?

ETA:
Made on Commodore Amiga 1200 with Octamed Sequencer, TR808, MS10 & 20 Synthesizer.

From website:
"From the romantic days of Amiga computing cosyness come 16 fresh new Legowelt tracks in the style of Beyond the Congo and Venom 18. Music about golf courses in the Bermuda Triangle (oh no the ball went into a dimensional hole!), Night driving through 16 bit Amiga Pine Forests (Deluxe Paint sprites!), British railroad romantics (dedication to the trainspotters), Dr. Loomis' adventures in Haddonfield and much, much more! Made on the mighty Amiga 1200 running the Octamed sequencer, a TR808, a couple of Korg modulars and some old effects boxes."

Love a bit of Legowelt! One of my faves is this blinder:

This one's off his Paranormal Soul album from 2012 which is pretty much ALL KILLER. He's prolific though - so I've not heard half of his stuff.....

Id like to hear an All Legowelt mix but couldnt fine one....anyone seen one?

Not a mix by him, but of him

i got it confused in the OP - this is the one i heard Josie play - i got the title confused - brand new this one - Beach Oceano, not Ocean Arrow...

...he really knows how to capture that vibe from yesteryear but still make it sound fresh...hard thing to do...many try

This is the one that made me aware of him -:cool: Aphex Selected Ambient Works Rip Off Done to a Tee!!

If theres any criticism to be had is that some of the tunes dont quite groove hard enough for the dancefloor, just a notch off on energy, slightly too ethereal - not this one though:

Old skool computer that had a built in sampler chip. Was always less popular than the Atari ST in studios due to its lack of midi but you could do a lot with the sampler chip. Octamed was a 'tracker' sequencer. You typed in individual notes on the tracker and different variables would affect the sound. Then the program would track along the sequence playing the samples as it went along. The 'Octa' prefix referred to the fact it could play eight channels. Perfect for your aspiring bedroom producer but getting samples could be a chore. You either had to order them on floppy or attempt to download them from your local bbs.

Heady days though! And you could actually produce some pretty fantastic tunes.

UTTU / Hothaus seem to release an EP per fortnight between the two labels, all of them good -Legowelt stepping it all up a notch though.

its a nice selection, short crossfade mixes, on the ambient end of what he does...seems to me he has a spectrum that can touch on all the techno traditions...german, dutch, italian, US, UK...i prefer it when goes more US, UK and ravey tbh , but hes clearly very talented and seemingly very much on a mission!

He often touches my early aphex twin button :)

Reading around supposedly he was brought in under the wing of fellow The Hague producer Unit Moebius who got him on the path and put out his first releases

I remember reading about these guys - they were around since that golden 91/92 era, madness squat party scene

This is from 97.... raw....

I do love that dutch and belgian techno sound...

thanks for the intro...been busy checking out/stealing his stuff.
So much of it I doubt I'll hear it all in my lifetime. Still lots to look
forward to. I haven't heard a crap track yet. Been blasting it out in
the kitchen as I cook. Because I'm old now.

Couple of years ago I got into running - it didn't last - but during that time Legowelt was my go-to running soundtrack.... his tunes were always just the job!

I think he uses a whole range of analogue gear...i think it was just that album (and then some) on the Amiga...

This mix is the one for me  mellow in the first and heats up some in the second....lapping it up on repeat

Yeah, I've been reading this about his studio. What an Aladdin's Cave!

He's even released an emulated Amiga 909!!!

'Eclectic Dutch producer, and #MakeItNew Alumnus, Legowelt recently released a free drum machine for Ableton Live, based on samples from his old Amiga 909 sample floppy disk. In addition to sampling his old floppy disk, Legowelt included some hand-crafted goodies in the form of some included FX.'
