Lee Jasper, Deputy Mayor of London

I must have missed Lee’s time as Deputy Mayor.

But he refers to himself as such both on the poster below and on his Facebook page.

Did I miss his term somehow? Lee Japser can you explain?

to answer this i searched the nexis database of newspapers, using the search terms "lee jasper" and "deputy mayor" and at no point during the period he claims to have been deputy mayor (2000-2008) was he deputy mayor, it was of course former haringey councillor nicky gavron

The GLA Act sets out that the Deputy Mayor must be an Assembly member, and serves at the pleasure of the Mayor.

Post-Livingstone it seems that Mayors have chosen to call policy advisors 'deputy mayors' even though there doesn't appear to be any statutory underpinning.

Section 49: The Deputy Mayor
109.Section 49 provides for the appointment of a deputy Mayor. The Mayor will be required to appoint a deputy Mayor from amongst the Assembly members, and will be required to appoint the deputy Mayor as a member of the Metropolitan Police Authority. The Mayor will be able to delegate functions to the Deputy Mayor, and the Deputy Mayor will, on agreeing to do so, become Acting Mayor if there is a vacancy in the office of Mayor or the Mayor is temporarily unable to act.

110.The Deputy Mayor cannot be the Chair or Deputy Chair of the Assembly.

111.The Mayor may dismiss the Deputy Mayor at any time. A Deputy Mayor may resign at any time. In either case, the Mayor must appoint a successor.

no such title was ever afforded jasper in any of the newspaper articles i've seen (about 60 covering the period)

No reference to 'deputy mayor' in this contemporaneous thread (2008) - only aide, advisor etc.

He wasn’t the statutory Deputy Mayor but I suppose it is possible that he was secretly appointed as another one during this period or maybe even retrospectively awarded the title for reasons we could only speculate about.
Do you think he has a special badge? Was there a secret ceremony commending him on behalf of a grateful city after which his new epaulettes and medal ribbons had to be turned over to be safely stored in a security deposit box?

So the gist is 'person who was an advisor more than a decade ago has taken to using more impressive title because subsequent advisors were collectively rebranded'?

Although Lee Jasper was never a "Deputy Mayor" of London (or anywhere else), there is now an abundance of officials whose job titles now include those words.

The first 'black' person to hold such a title was probably this man.
