Kick Racism Out of Football

23 April 2022: Crawley suspend manager John Yems over 'credible' accusations of discriminatory language

5 May 2022: Crawley Town FC: Manager John Yems refuses to answer questions after (racial) segregation claims

The allegations against Crawley Town FC manager John Yems, which he apparently denies, are understood to include:

* Presiding over segregated changing facilities with two dressing rooms at the training ground which, although not official policy, was reinforced by comments to white players such as, ‘Don’t change in the black boys’ room’.

* Frequently referring to a number of the squad’s players from Asian backgrounds as ‘terrorists, suicide bombers and curry munchers’.

* Calling one youth-team player a ‘suicide bomber’ on a regular basis and telling him not to get the train home wearing a backpack because fellow passengers would think he intended to blow it up.

* Routinely using the n-word and referring to one black player as a ‘Zulu warrior’.

* Calling a young player of Cypriot extraction a ‘Greek bobble-head’ and mocking Greek music.

* Banishing two players with ethnic minority backgrounds from training with the first team without explanation.

* Causing such resentment in the squad that seven players complained to the Professional Footballers' Association last month, with at least one seeking counselling as a result of the damage the manager did to his mental health.

Does he really come from Brixton?

What surprised me, if that's the right word, about this shit is that it was old school, full on 1970s racism. I'm not naive enough to suggest that kind of racism isn't still about, but most racism in sports or other institutions seems to be more 'coded'. With him, there's no metaphor, no allusions, just full on, direct, primary racism. All of which begs the question of how various clubs and bosses let him get away with it so long. There can have been no doubt that he's been a full on racist throughout his career, nothing that could have been 'open to misinterpretation' etc.

If that is so, one wonders why or how John Yems' post-playing career included coaching at the Fulham academy, managing Horsham, coaching Millwall and Dulwich Hamlet, being a joint caretaker manager at Crawley Town, chief scout and then first team coach at Grays Athletic, scouting for Torquay United, assistant manager at Exeter City, football operations manager at AFC Bournemouth and coaching or scouting roles at Gillingham and Newcastle United.

Someone who will be unable to see the climax of Everton FC's 2021 / 22 season in person is 43-year-old season ticket holder Deanna Franklin of Bath Street North, Southport ...

... on 16 February 2022, at Sefton Magistrates’ Court Deanna Franklin admitted racially abusing Dwight McNeil of Burnley FC on 13 September 2021 and received a football banning order for three years, blocking her from attending any regulated matches.

Deanna Franklin cannot go within a mile of Goodison Park for two hours either before kick off or after a match ends when Everton play there.

The same rule applies to stadiums in other cities when Everton travel there for games. Deanna Franklin, who cannot work due to medical issues, was also fined £180.

Deanna Franklin rejected the idea that she was racist claiming, “I have mixed race friends, I’m not a racist."

... meanwhile elsewhere, another English manager takes a different stance:

A fitting end to an English football season of weekly racial abuse:

31-year old Jamie Arnold of Norton Bridge in Staffordshire has denied racially abusing ex-England and Manchester United footballer Rio Ferdinand during the first Premier League match at Wolverhampton Wanderers' ("Wolves") Molineux ground with crowds present following the Covid-19 lockdown.

Jamie Arnold is accused of doing a monkey impression and shouting racial abuse towards the former defender while he was working as a pundit for BT Sports, during the game between Wolves and Manchester United on 23 May 2021. Jamie Arnold is also accused of making homophobic comments towards the match referee.

Jamie Arnold is scheduled to be tried on 26 August 2021 at Wolverhampton Crown Court.

32-year old Jamie Arnold, of Norton Bridge, near Stone, has finally gone on trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court accused of causing racially aggravated harassment, alarm or distress to Rio Ferdinand by using "threatening, abusive or insulting" words or behaviour at the Wolves v Manchester United match at Molineux on 23 May 2022.

According to lifelong Wolves supporter Mark Zammit, who won his ticket for the match in a fans' ballot, "He (Jamie Arnold) was shouting the abuse... at Rio and doing a monkey gesture, with his hands, under his arms. He shouted 'Rio you f****** monkey'."

Back in time to have a tilt at the England job?

Is that a reflection of how referree's can be influenced by fans. Home advantage and all that?

I always thought the home advantage was meant to be mostly due to the effect of fans on players.

But yes, that is the interpretation here, considering that the effect was not present when they were playing the games without fans present during covid.

Which is a definite mercy imo, because we’d be flooded in accusations of racist refereeing and it would be getting quite nasty by now otherwise.

I've been trying to re-educate racist football fans for years.

Millwall Football Club's Head of Recruitment and Talent ID, Barry Dunn, has been suspended by The Football Association from all football and football related activity for eight weeks with immediate effect, fined £525, ordered to attend a mandatory face-to-face education programme and has received a reprimand and warning as to his future conduct, for a breach of misconduct in relation to social media activity.

Barry Dunn admitted the charge and his sanctions were subsequently imposed by an Independent Regulatory Commission following a personal hearing.

According to Barry Dunn:

"Having reviewed the offending re-tweet again with the wonderful benefit of hindsight, I can now see how its message would cause offence to people, both within and outside the Islamic faith. As I go on to explain, this was not how I viewed the post on the evening of 15 March (2023). Nevertheless, I can now see that the post’s message is discriminatory and offensive"

The Independent Regulatory Commission also took account of the numerous character references and other positive statements about Barry Dunn's character and work put forward his behalf, as well as Millwall's Head of Recruitment and Talent ID's age (he is 71 years old) and that he has been suspended (on full pay) from his duties at Millwall since 15 May 2023.

The Independent Regulatory Commission also stated that persons who occupy leadership positions of trust and responsibility in the coaching and management of football are "role models for many others and have the ability to shape the culture and lead change in and outside of their clubs". They also noted that "This is particularly so when a person is Head of Academy Recruitment at a club and who is involved with players under the age of 18."

There is more information regarding the case here.

Sheffield United FC and Tottenham Hotspur FC have both condemned the racist and abusive messages that Sheffield United's goalkeeper, Wes Foderingham received after their premier league game yesterday.

Sheffield United issued a statement saying they "condemn the racist, abusive and threatening messages" sent to Mr Foderingham.

They added: "The club will now work with relevant bodies to investigate and support Wes.

"There is no room for racism in our game."

Tottenham Hotspur stated: "We are disgusted to hear of racist, abusive and threatening messages sent to Wes Foderingham following yesterday's match."

"The club stands firmly against all forms of discrimination and will co-operate fully with Sheffield United and the relevant bodies in their investigations.

"We shall not hesitate in taking the strongest possible action, including club bans, against any so-called fan found responsible."
