Justice Department ends of use of Private For-profit Prisons

The Justice Department plans to end its use of private prisons after officials concluded the facilities are both less safe and less effective at providing correctional services than those run by the government.

Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates announced the decision on Thursday in a memo that instructs officials to either decline to renew the contracts for private prison operators when they expire or “substantially reduce” the contracts’ scope. The goal, Yates wrote, is “reducing — and ultimately ending — our use of privately operated prisons.”

“They simply do not provide the same level of correctional services, programs, and resources; they do not save substantially on costs; and as noted in a recent report by the Department’s Office of Inspector General, they do not maintain the same level of safety and security,” Yates wrote.

While a good first step, no one should get too excited. This doesn't apply to state facilities and ignores the fact that federal prisoners are still mostly housed in government prisons that are still pretty awful. State prisons are often even worse. My own state's prisons are 200% above capacity and so awful they can't pay enough to get anyone to work there.

Still, I'd hate to own stock in such a company this morning.

well its a start. Private prisons is a bit robocop. And wasn't there a judge sending kids to jail for kickbacks from one such outfit? one that got caught at it anyway

As I've pointed out on other threads 90% of the prisoners are in state & local systems. But this is an excellent start. Private prisons should be outlawed.
