A second Briton who left to go to Syria has said he wants to return to the UK. Jack Letts, who is suspected of joining Islamic State, said he missed Britain, but doubted he would ever be allowed to return.

Letts, 23, who was dubbed “Jihadi Jack” by British media and holds dual nationality through his Canadian father, told ITV News he did not believe either nation would help him because “no one really cares”.

He travelled to Syria in 2014 and is now being held in a Kurdish prison. His case follows that of Shamima Begum, who left for Syria to join Isis in 2015. Earlier this week, the home secretary, Sajid Javid, ordered that her citizenship be revoked after she said she wanted to return to the UK.

On Friday, Letts told ITV News: “I miss people mostly, I miss my mum. Five years I haven’t seen my mum, two years I haven’t spoken to my mum. I miss pasties. And Doctor Who.

“I feel British, I am British. If the UK accepted me, I would go back to the UK, but I don’t think that’s going to happen.” He said he did not know if his Canadian passport would still be valid.

He said when asked about the Bataclan attack: “At the time, I thought it was a good thing. At the time we had this idea, living in Raqqa, getting bombed every five minutes by coalition jets. I’ve seen children burnt alive. You have this idea of ‘why shouldn’t it happen to them?’” But he said he had since had a change of heart and felt sympathy for the innocent people killed as he “realised that they had nothing to do with it”.

Letts said he had lived on “the Oxford Street of Raqqa” and married an Iraqi woman who had given birth to their son.

Seems there was a 2015 photo of him doing a one fingered ISIS Salute, so perhaps a 2 fingered salute is in order in this case. Apparently he loves Britain so much he's also begging the Canadians to let him in.

I have no idea what to do with these people.
Headshot and a shallow grave is the easy option , though it's not me having to shoot a prisoner because they are inconvenient, not that it's a problem for some in Iraq. One police unit solved prison over crowding by simply executing surplus prisoners. Then not understanding why this was a problem.
Best option would have them being quietly brought back and then either prison or reintegration. Kurds have enough problems without dealing with foreign fighters and jihadi brides.
 
There were 528 posts on the Jihadi Bride Shamina Begum thread within the first 24 hours of the thread being posted. I predict that this one, and Jihadi Jack himself will not emote people quite as much. :rolleyes:

Yes I know it's the weekend and people may well be doing personal stuff rather than trying to avoid work, but still. Let's hope that we at least see some consistency from 'I'm alright Javid' the home secretary on this one eh?:hmm:
 
I wonder if it's because there is a clear dual nationality at work here making the cases different. I mean, what do you expect, spymaster to say welcome him with open arms? He'll say the same thing as he did on the other thread - revoke citizenship. Everyone who argued that on the other thread will.
 
As I mentioned on the other thread, the different way he's been treated from Begum does appear, on the face ot if, to be blatantly racist. Personally, I don't want to see him back here, albeit I'd have the same concerns about the Home Secretary using the power to strip citizenship from someone born in Britain.

Yes, I'd be amazed if they said anything else. What'd be more interesting is where those who re in favour of letting her return stand on him, given he was older when he left, is more likely to have been involved in front-line combat and trained in weapons and explosives, etc.

What would you expect me to say here? That he should be treated different because he's a bloke? Or is this typical Race Card Rita stuff again and something to do with him being white?

If we can do it legally I hope we strip this cunt's citizenship before Canada do.

Don't think anyone was suggesting people will change their views. There will just be a lot less of them.

Yes. Some people won't see the thread, some will consider that they've said all they need to on the other thread, and I suspect some are racist/misogynistic (albeit fewer on here than on, say, Facebook and Twitter).

In this country one reason for punishing people with prison is to protect the general population, another is deterrence and of course there's the hope of repentance and rehabilitation. And there is retribution. Is there any reason why the people of Syria or Iraq, Kurdish or otherwise, shouldn't exact their ideas of punishment on those who sought to destroy their lives? Equally is there some reason why he should be treated differently from foreign fighters returned to eg Egypt or Pakistan where they face the death penalty. IMO they should be locked up over there for as long as the locals think it's a good idea- probably a large proportion of their lives.
