As much as I crow, Cuba really isn't communist if we are serious. It's a socially conservative and authoritarian brand of strong-man socialism. I don't see that working in Haiti.

Stupid thread but ironically a 'socialist' country like Cuba could each Haiti a thing or two about disaster management and civil defence. I seem to remember it being said that Cuba responded better to the hurricanes and flooding than the US did, because they valued people as the most vital resource rather than property.

How? Haiti and Cuba are very different. They were very different back in 1959, too, in terms of the existence of a civic society, institutions, some kind of infrastructure.

Haiti is uniquely fucked, and the reasons for that unique state of fuckedness stretch right back to its foundation as a state by rebel slaves. Haiti's never been given a chance.
