I'm not talking about protesters. I'm talking about violent criminals doing a lot of harm to many people. There are a lot of peaceful protests taking place in Portland. They are not the problem. And anarchists is a pretty accurate description. They have a long history in this city of trying, and in this case suceeding, in hijacking legitimate protest.

Without even looking at the Portland protests, I’m going to go out on a limb and bet that the buildings targeted will have some link to either state control or rentier profiteering. The message given by the authorities is always “it’s just mindless violence attacking ordinary folk” but this never turns out to actually be true on a systematic basis (albeit that the odd unlucky person does get caught in the crossfire). Mobs need commonality of purpose and a feeling of legitimacy to maintain momentum, and that does not happen mindlessly.
