Is America burning? (Black Lives Matter protests, civil unrest and riots 2020)

I don't do Twitter so can't/won't link to it but you might be interested to look up the account of Jon Ehrens who has ended up in hospital for filming white supremacists walking around Philadelphia with weapons including an axe, a sledgehammer and several baseball bats.

He's a radio producer.

That person's twitter is full of shit tbh, conspiracy theory type stuff. What is the point or newsworthiness of the video you posted from her?
If the police are being shown to be causing the problem then yes ,it is newsworthy, unless you think the video was faked ?

As for the CT stuff , to my shame I didnt wallow too far into her account to look.

crikey, cheers - I met Jon a couple of years ago, he's a mate of a mate - saw his mashed up face this morning on twitter but hadn't got round to seeing where it came from...

I wondered whether that might happen when I saw the video of them on the prowl

I don't think it's faked, but I don't think it shows the police smashing a window to discredit people/start a riot. I think it almost certainly shows police clearing an already broken window to stop it being such a hazard or something. And her Twitter is full of stuff like that, 'it's only the police doing stuff, or outside agitators etc etc.'

Just had a look. She is pro-looting but opposed to white thugs and their window breaking ways. American twitter liberalism is a *morass of confused gibberish.

*Not to be confused with heroic multitudinous positionism

a rightwing "life-coach" claimed the he and a great many other gun-owning types were "ready" to go out and mow down the protesters, whenever Trump gave "the signal."
Wanting to see what the Trumpists are saying in response to last night, came across RTs of the fascist actor James Woods - he is very much up for “Civil War 2” and is geeing up his followers to get their guns and (as Trump last night non-too subtly suggested) “ exercise their second amendment rights”....
The pogrom fantasies of much of the previously more restrained elements of the hard right are out in the open now, full mask off. Their fantasies are much the same as the openly violent/genocidal fascist elements that have been forced off social media into other methods of communication.

Great post, but how does it differ from the events of 68 and the Humphrey vs Nixon Presendential battle, were Nixon mobilised the 'silent majority' to vote for him, or isn't there a S/M now?

I had wondered about this (ie Nixon's huge victories on the back of the urban unrest of the late 60s) but I think maybe Gimigimi's post answers it? In 1968 and 1972 Nixon had the back up of 25-30 years of rising living standards for most people, certainly most white people, in many ways the US state was at the height of its post New Deal, post WW2 legitimacy. There really was a 'silent majority' who were doing fine out of the status quo and were not surrounded by the kind of collapse we are seeing now in previously-sheltered white communities where mortality rates are soaring (the "deaths of despair") while they have steadily declined among BME populations

And while the invasion of Vietnam was a huge symbolic challenge to the Nixon-era moral legitmacy of the state, while it was ongoing, when hundreds of thousands of US troops were fighting and tens of thousands were dying, the patriotic card was very playable. None of those factors are in place now.

This photoshoot should hopefully be talked about in schools one day. They teargassed the clergy who work there (who were outside handing out water to protestors) as part of clearing the way. He didn't enter the church (the priests there hate him anyway) just held the bible upside down whilst threatening to use the army to crush dissent. Where are we up to..Screenshot 2020-06-02 at 13.51.53.png..

Yeah, Fascism US-style, as in the oft-misattributed quote

"When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross."

(not Sinclair Lewis)

Or in this case, carrying an upside-down Bible.

He's not the most convincing of devout believers, is he?

I like this one as well re Fascism in America, said in 1938 by Halford Luccock but still relevant today.

When and if fascism comes to America it will not be labeled 'made in Germany'; it will not be marked with a swastika; it will not even be called fascism; it will be called, of course, 'Americanism'

I can't really see how this is going to be resolved peacefully now. I'm against guns, but the way things are going right now, you'd probably want to own one. :(

there was no fascism before mussolini. yeh you might see your proto-fascists here and there in the 1890s, 1900s, people who blazed trails your actual fascists followed. but to say there was fascism in the united states from the 18th century misunderstands what fascism is and makes a mockery of any serious attempt to understand the past. unless you're using fascism in its other sense of 'something i don't like'. the use of the fasces is by itself no indication of fascism, being as it's been a sign of the state for centuries before assuming its current symbolism.
