Is America burning? (Black Lives Matter protests, civil unrest and riots 2020)

How independent investigations into the deaths of citizens at the hands of the state's armed agents work:

  • National Guard &/or Louisville Metro PD ‘return’ fire towards protesters/people in a BBQ shop queue
  • Restauranteur dies
  • Kentucky State Police will investigate
  • Triple exonerations all round!
They left the body of David McAtee on the street for 12 hours after shooting him too.

I recorded some of CNN overnight, just catching-up now, they've had a split screen of Trump's live address from the rose garden, talking about law & order, just as federal police & military police from the National Guard launched an attack on the peaceful protesters outside the White House, to clear them away, so Trump could come out for a photo opportunity in front of a damaged church.

And, blimey, the CNN presenter has gone in hard criticising Trump for his action, no wonder he hates them.

The NY Times is reporting the Bishop in charge of the church was “outraged” that Mr. Trump went to the church “after he threatened to basically rain down military force.”

And, the Mayor of Washington said the federal police officers’ clearing of peaceful protesters was “shameful” and had made the job of city police officers harder, whilst the chair of the Arlington County Board in Virginia, said the county had ordered its police force — which had been helping to patrol the protests in Washington — to return, saying their mutual aid agreement had been “abused.”

How to make friends and influence people.

In his first remarks from the White House since massive protests have swept the country, President Trump said Monday evening that the looting and violent demonstrations in reaction to the death of George Floyd in police custody were “acts of domestic terror.”

Speaking in the Rose Garden as protesters and law enforcement held a tense standoff outside, Mr. Trump said he planned for a police and law enforcement presence to “dominate the streets” and said he would respond with an “overwhelming law enforcement presence until the violence has been quelled.”

Mr. Trump said he was among the Americans “rightly sickened and revolted” by the death of Mr. Floyd. But, he said, “If a city or state refuses to take the actions necessary to defend the life and property of their residents, then I will deploy the United States military and quickly solve the problem for them,” he said.

Just after Mr. Trump concluded his speech, military police from the National Guard clad in camouflage and riot shields surged in front of a line of law enforcement officers pushing protesters back from the mouth of Lafayette Square outside the White House.

Police officers used tear gas and flash grenades to clear out the crowd so Mr. Trump could visit the nearby St. John’s Church, where there had been a parish house basement fire Sunday night. The president stood in front of the boarded up church posing for photographs with a Bible, after the police dispersed peaceful protesters.

Mr. Trump walked back to the White House after a few minutes.

The president’s church visit was criticized by Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, who said she was “outraged” that Mr. Trump went to the church “after he threatened to basically rain down military force.”

“The president used a Bible, the most sacred text of the Judeo-Christian tradition, and one of the churches of my diocese, without even asking us, as a backdrop for a message antithetical to the teachings of Jesus and everything that our church stands for,” she said in an interview.

Mayor Muriel Bowser of Washington said the federal police officers’ clearing of peaceful protesters was “shameful” and had made the job of city police officers harder. Libby Garvey, the chair of the Arlington County Board in Virginia, said the county had ordered its police force — which had been helping to patrol the protests in Washington — to return, saying their mutual aid agreement had been “abused.”

Earlier in the day, Mr. Trump had berated America’s governors over their response to the protests across the nation, calling the protesters “terrorists,” demanding “retribution,” and warning the governors that they will look like “jerks” if they don’t order protesters arrested and imprisoned.

Probably this one.

So he really is threatening to get the army out, whether they would all follow orders i don't know and even he might not want to risk that so hopefully its just more inflamatory noise from the commander in chief.

Never a bad time to listen to the "It Could Happen Here" podcast
(episodes listed in reverse order. Start at the bottom)

Hes updating on Portland protests in the latest of one of his other podcasts Listen Free to Worst Year Ever on iHeartRadio Podcasts | iHeartRadio

This podcast started this year about the election then talked a bit about covid community responses, now the protests.

The protesters are missing a trick here they should be burning Trump hotels and golf courses

"Fortunately, the burned hotel had what the president describes as 'tremendously' good insurance. Presidential son Eric Trump, who smelled strongly of petrol for some reason, said he sustained minor injuries after spotting the blaze while driving in the area and trying to extinguish it in its early stages."

He can if he invokes the 1807 Insurrection Act according to the news.

Just checking, there's seems to be difference opinions, as the law has been changed a few times, and is somewhat confusing

Congress amended the law after Hurricane Katrina in 2006 to give more clarity about its use during natural disasters, but dropped some of those changes a year later after objections by state governors who did not want to cede their authority.

But there may be curbs on what Trump can do. One section of the law suggests that states must first request help, but other portions of the Insurrection Act do not require a governor or state legislature's okay, such as when the President determines the situation in a state makes it impossible to enforce US laws or when citizens' rights are abridged.

Governors were quick to dispute Trump, as J.B. Pritzker of Illinois did on CNN shortly after Trump's comments.
"I reject the notion that the federal government can send troops into the state of Illinois," said Pritzker, a Democrat. "The fact is that the president has created an incendiary moment here. He wants to change the subject from his failure over coronavirus, a miserable failure and now see a moment when there's unrest because of the injustice that was done to George Floyd that he now wants to create another topic and something where he can be the law and order president."

What a bloody mess.

So, that speech included signals to far right militias (note talk about civilians assisting police and army and people’s right to bear arms) and then standing with the Bible in hand is signalling to every falangist, fundi evangelical with a semi automatic that he is with them. Couple that with targeting “anarchists” and “anteeefa” (a recent tweet appears to be setting up a Sanders campaign organiser in one area as a fall guy/target) and you can see where he is going.

Failed state isnt it.

Fucking hells bells.

Amid a stampede, footage shows one officer shoving Myers with a shield before punching him while another officer swings at them with a baton as they try to escape. A third officer appears to try to hold his colleagues back and let the journalists go.

It is understood Mr Morrison was unaware of the incident when he spoke to Donald Trump this morning. Mr Morrison has since spoken to Channel Seven and assured them of the Government's support should they wish to pursue a formal complaint.

The Prime Minister has also asked the Australian embassy in Washington DC to investigate the incident and provide further advice on registering Australia's strong concerns with the responsible local authorities.
