Is America burning? (Black Lives Matter protests, civil unrest and riots 2020)

Shortly before midnight on June 13, while demonstrators gathered at Lake Street and Girard Avenue to protest the murder of Winston Smith by sheriff’s deputies and US Marshals, a man named Nicholas Kraus drove his SUV into the crowd at high speed, killing Deona Marie Erickson. One Black anti-fascist militant who was on the ground at the time of the attack reports that it was clear to those present that it was an intentional attack: “You heard his engine from three blocks away.”

According to Unicorn Riot,

“Deona Erickson’s car was parked on the side of the street in a way that would protect the people who were gathering. She was sitting down on the sidewalk about 15 feet from her car moments before the perpetrator smashed directly against her car at a very high speed. Witnesses say she was then hit by her car and sent flying. Street medics on the scene resuscitated her but she later died at the hospital.”

Deona Marie Erickson had two daughters. She worked as a program manager at a center for disabled adults. Today would have been her 32nd birthday. She gave her life to protect those who protest police murder...

Let’s put this attack in context.

Fox News and the Daily Caller circulated a video encouraging their viewers to carry out vehicular attacks against protesters months ahead of the fascist “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville at which a self-identified neo-Nazi did exactly that, killing Heather Heyer and injuring 35 people. Afterwards, leaked chats showed other neo-Nazis also planning to use vehicles to attack protesters.

In summer 2020, vehicular attacks surged in response to protests against the police murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and others. Over a dozen people were killed in these and other attacks on the movement.

Today, legislators around the United States are taking steps to criminalize protest activity, introducing a wide range of anti-protest bills. Foremost among them, Oklahoma and Florida lawmakers have passed laws guaranteeing civil and criminal immunity to drivers who hit demonstrators with vehicles, effectively granting vigilantes the right to crash cars into demonstrators. At the same time, Florida has introduced penalties of up to 15 years imprisonment for blocking traffic.

The message is clear enough. In short, lawmakers and police seek to crack down on pedestrians acting collectively to oppose state violence, while extending additional privileges to drivers who act individually to support state violence via their own attacks.

chauvin due to be sentenced 19:30 BST

The sentencing of Derek Chauvin is due to begin at 13:30 local time (19:30 BST) and is expected to last at least an hour.

In Minneapolis, people are already gathering outside Hennepin County Government Center. Some protests are planned nearby, but local security preparations have not been as heavy as they were ahead of the trial verdict in April.

the ny post, of course. i've broken the link to the filth.

Derek Chauvin’s mother begged a Minnesota judge Friday to give the former cop a light sentence, and she defended her son as a “good man” despite his murder conviction in the death of George Floyd.

22.5 years for murdering a man, said man who would probably get a longer sentence if found with x amount of a controlled substance.

Cunt.

Rights and wrongs yeah, but I think the judge has got it right here, they only had 2nd degree to go with, so throw away they key was not an option, but they have gone with rest of meaningful life inside, as a racist cop, pretty harsh, no less than that cunt deserves. 1000’s of other cunts out there need the same. Our own PC Monk is up for his sentencing on Monday, bet that fucker don’t get 22.5...

Might also want to break the other link within your post. ;)

40 years was an option.

40 years would have made sense in this case.

I stand corrected. According to The Guardian, the maximum sentence was 30 years for 2nd degree murder, for a first offense.

Am a bit confused though because I watched The Washington Post's live stream and they definitely said 40 years was an option.

Apparently there would have been a very strong chance of any sentence much more than double what state guidelines called for being reduced on appeal - with it being slightly less than double, Chauvin's sentence could go up instead of down if he tries to appeal.

Fuck me, his character witness was his fucking mum, who said he’s a good boy and not a racist. I know filth can’t have many mates but if the best you can do is your mum, Jesus...
That's when I just had to stop watching. Couldn't listen to the bullshit Chauvin side of things. Very powerful and moving statements from George Floyd's family. Should have been 30 years really IMO.

Is this the bit where loads of British white men confidently speculate on Chauvin’s future experiences in prison, just cos they’ve gleaned some shit off of Oz, The Wire and Goodfellas?
You mean like getting BBC? If it's free for view possibly, I doubt they will get pay for view like HBO.

A mate of mine says on facebook that under Minnesota law, Chauvin will have to serve two thirds of his sentence (15 years) and he will be eligible for supervised release for the remaining seven and a half years.

It's apparently routine under Minnesota law for an offender to serve the final third of their sentence under supervised release - with good behaviour, etc. Chauvin might be able to get parole earlier.

I think he's a sadistic killer who deserves to spend the rest of his days behind bars but it doesn't make that much difference whether he spends 5 or 50 years in prison - the important thing is that he got convicted and is getting the same punishment a murderer who wasn't a police officer would get.
