Is America burning? (Black Lives Matter protests, civil unrest and riots 2020)

Meanwhile in Arizona: They Took Umbrellas to a Black Lives Matter Protest. The D.A. Hit Them with Gang Charges

In Washington, D.C., members of a pro-Trump mob that stormed the Capitol and killed a police officer are so far being charged mainly with disorderly conduct and unlawful entry. The man photographed with his feet on Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s desk faces three charges that carry a maximum penalty of one year in prison. After the violent siege, some members of the mob simply returned to their hotel.

Many were quick to point out an apparent double standard when compared to the way police in D.C. treated Black Lives Matter protesters over the summer—like when they tear gassed protesters to clear the way for a Trump photo op, or when row upon row of National Guard troops stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in anticipation of the sixth day of George Floyd protests. A similar double standard is now on display in Arizona.

In Maricopa County, 15 people who attended a Black Lives Matter protest where traffic cones were knocked down are being charged with rioting, aggravated assault, and assisting in a criminal street gang, all serious felonies that could land them in prison for decades. The gang charges are based only on the fact that the group carried umbrellas, wore black, and used the phrase “all cops are bastards.” The 15 Black Lives Matter protesters were forcibly arrested on the night of the protest. One was shot with pepper bullets; another spent two weeks in jail...

In arrest forms, police officers said the protesters belonged to “a group known as ACAB All Cops Are Bastards.”

I am very much enjoying the snake biting its own tail at the moment.

The Trump administration wrote a memo to charge BLM protesters with a shopping list of crimes, signed off by William Barr and other Trump cronies.

Probably forgotten by Trump. Do it.

If I lived near a federal jail where some of these guys are definitely going, I'd send them a print out of this with LOL written at the bottom.

Spazzo’ identified:

Mr. Spazzo's opsec leaves much to be desired.

Mr. Spazzo's opsec leaves much to be desired.

Nominative determinism of the day: Spazzo was charged alongside a co-defendant, one Mr. Pepe.
According to the charging documents, Pezzola and Pepe are members of the Proud Boys, a group self-described as a “pro-Western fraternal organization for men who refuse to apologize for creating the modern world; aka Western Chauvinists.” Proud Boys members often wear the colors yellow and black, as well as other apparel adorned with Proud Boys-related logos and emblems. It is alleged that both Pepe and Pezzola possess tactical vests branded with the Proud Boys logo, and have attended various Proud Boys gatherings and protests.

According to the indictment, Pezzola and Pepe engaged in a conspiracy to obstruct, influence, impede, and interfere with law enforcement officers engaged in their official duties in protecting the U.S. Capitol and its grounds on Jan. 6, 2021. It is alleged that Pezzola and Pepe took actions to evade and render ineffective the protective equipment deployed by Capitol Police in active riot control measures, including actions to remove temporary metal barricades erected by the Capitol Police for the purpose of controlling access to the Capitol Grounds, and the stealing and purloining of property belonging to Capitol Police.
feels bad man, etc

Incidentally the 'masked man' the Huff Post mentions was an agent provocateur from the far-right:

Is reported to allegedly be an agent provocateur from the far-right according to the police/an anonymous tip sent to the police, anyway. Which may turn out to be 100% true, but I think it's always best to err on the side of caution with these things until they're verified.

If you read the article is seems highly likely that he was positively identified though the above publication refrains from naming him because he has not been charged.

I mean, without wanting to go all Grassy Knollington, does that not in itself seem a bit suspicious to you? Like, if someone caught on video committing some fairly high-profile criminal acts was positively identified, I'd expect that the next step would be for the cops, or DA or whoever, to charge them, not to issue a statement saying "yep, we've identified this person, but we're not charging them" and for that to be the end of it. Maybe more evidence will come to light showing that this person definitely dunnit, but as things stand I'm reluctant to just take the police's word for it without seeing any evidence.

Charges dropped against Buffalo police who shoved 75-year-old protester to the ground
Thu 11 Feb 2021
Criminal charges have been dropped against two police officers seen on video last spring shoving a 75-year-old protester to the ground in Buffalo, New York, prosecutors said on Thursday.

A grand jury declined to indict the Buffalo officers Robert McCabe and Aaron Torgalski on felony assault charges, ending the matter, said John Flynn, the Erie County district attorney.

The case concerned the longtime activist Martin Gugino, who was shoved by officers clearing an area of the city from demonstrators protesting the police killing of George Floyd last June. News cameras covering the protests captured the incident on video, which subsequently went viral and sparked widespread outrage.

Gugino, pushed backward, started bleeding after hitting his head on the pavement. He spent about a month in the hospital with a fractured skull and brain injury.

The ACAB 18 case has now been dropped, apparently saying ACAB doesn't make you a gang member after all: Maricopa County Attorney’s Office dismisses case against protesters charged as criminal street gang

Meanwhile, other news from Phoenix police:
Apparently unaware a camera was still recording, three officers continually disparage a group of protesters on October 17, 2020 by calling them things like “dickheads” and “asshole kids.”

One wondered why the protest response team didn’t “stomp on them right away.”

Another responded, “Gas em. I don’t give a sh** if we just gas them and let them run like crazy…(inaudible) the sh** out of them, who gives a sh**?”

At the end of the video, one of the officers calls a citizen — who shouted at them as they drove by — a “f*ing liberal piece of sh.”
After shooting a protester in the groin, a special team of Phoenix Police officers celebrated the shot with commemorative coins to sell and share.

The “challenge coins” clearly depict the man being shot on the front and have the date of the protest on the back, according to images and photos obtained by ABC15.

This story is part of an ABC15 investigation series titled "Politically Charged"

The coins also have the following two phrases: “GOOD NIGHT LEFT NUT” and “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN ONE NUT AT A TIME.”
I'm guessing "good night left nut" is a play on "good night left side", which would suggest the coin's designer has been moving in some... interesting political circles.

Absolutely insane.
"This movement has become one of the strongest global movements for working with racial injustice," Petter Eide, a socialist lawmaker who proposed BLM for the Peace Prize, told AFP.

Should go to Trump instead?

reverting?

wishful thinking???

During the Texas freezings, got to thinking about some of the Americans I've met while camping or driving through New England.
Stella folks.

But I remember driving down in Vermont and needing gas. It was around the time unleaded gas was introduced and I wanted to make sure I go the right gas.

I asked if he had unleaded and he just exploded....Canadians like me think Americans don't care about the environment, they think we are backward......etc.

From then on, I've never tried to make an assumption about you guys, and would prefer to think of you as a cousin.

So, yes, reverting.

Because it was/is a movement that resulted in an immense amount of violence, hate, looting and arson and did nothing to help black people as far as I can see. Their leadership sat idly by as anarchists pretending to support the movement rioted night after night, month after month and said nothing against such destructive behavior. I very much doubt MLK would have approved. His thing was non-violence.

He was pro peaceful protest but he understood why riots happened:
“In the final analysis, a riot is the language of the unheard. And what is it that America has failed to hear?” and that is certainly true of the BLM protestors
