IPCC say 12 years to limit climate change

yeah I'm not sure a coalition of national unity or whatever s going to cut it either at this point tbf. Fuckin, this is some american senator:

'Climate change is coming – fast. We must do more to stop it. I introduced the Climate Risk Disclosure Act to encourage markets to transition from fossil fuels to cleaner energy sources, and reduce the risks of environmental and financial catastrophe.'

my bold. These people need head mounting on spikes

Politicians is the US fall into several categories:

* Politicians who deny Climate Change science entirely
* Politicians who believe it, but don't think its caused by humans
* Politicians who believe it, but somehow don't think we should do anything, or can't do anything about it. (Or, even weirdly, believe climate change will improve things.)*
* Politicians like the above, who understand that it's happening, but thinks their precious god "the market" will take care of it.
* Politicians who get it, but don't feel they the political will exists to deal with this head on (also known as feckless handwringers).
* A few rare ones who are making progress at the state or local level.

The sad thing is that the guy you quoted is considered a moderate. His way is the one most likely to be the course we take.

* I actually met someone who made the argument to me that we shouldn't do anything because he had seen projections that said Nebraska would become both warmer in winter and wetter. It might even improve crop yields. The "I'm alright, Jack, hypothesis." He also thinks any warming that happens can be reversed through technology (we currently do not have).

There is very little guidance on what individuals can do to make a difference ...

It's not a problem which any one individual lay person has made a significant contribution to, so I would infer that a problem caused by a system might require a systematic solution.

AP interviewer: "But scientists say this is nearing a point where this can't be reversed."

Trump: "No, no. Some say that and some say differently. I mean, you have scientists on both sides of it. My uncle was a great professor at MIT for many years. Dr. John Trump. And I didn't talk to him about this particular subject, but I have a natural instinct for science, and I will say that you have scientists on both sides of the picture."

First he says it’s a hoax. Then there’s a political agenda, & now he has scientific instinct! There ain’t enough

beginning to suspect the massive malthusian streak of the 19th century bourgeoisie never really went away. Show them forecasts of die offs and displacements and they think 'necessary adjustments, more left over for the right guys (me and mine)'

It's the natural outcome of underlying philosophies that include prophesies of Armageddon and Social Darwinism. Add to that the disdain for the poor that prosperity theology has made socially acceptable and it fits in perfectly with their world view. They'll call it "Christianity" and say that Jesus wants it that way.

One suspects he's not actually trying to make sense. Saying whatever shit pops into his head has made the fucker presdient, why would he change up his game now? Even if he was capable of doing anything else besides babbling nonsense.

The no shit Sherlock scenario:

The IPCC is finally getting the message. Last week’s special report includes an exciting new scenario that—for the first time—does not rely on speculative technology. Developed by an international team of scientists, it projects that we can reduce emissions fast enough to keep under 1.5 degrees but only if we’re willing to fundamentally change the logic of our economy. Instead of growing industrial output at all costs, it proposes a simple alternative: that we start to consume less....

I plan to be the old guy who tells the youngsters how it all came to pass, and how could have all been different, before dying of some preventable disease.

The thread title is telling, inasmuch as we are fucked, but there is some scope to delay the fucking and lessen the final state of fuckedness.

10 Costliest Climate-Driven Extreme Weather Events of 2018 Caused at Least $84.8B in Damage: Analysis
December 28, 2018
From heat waves and hurricanes to fires and floods, the 10 costliest extreme weather events of 2018—driven by the global climate crisis—killed thousands of people and caused at least $84.8 billion in damage, according to a new analysis from Christian Aid.

Counting the Cost: A Year of Climate Breakdown (pdf), published Thursday by the London-based group, notes that "extreme weather hit every populated continent in 2018, killing, injuring, and displacing millions, and causing major economic damage."

"All of these disasters are linked with human-caused climate change," it points out. "This report highlights some of the disastrous consequences of this warming that are already striking."

It's about time the politicians started listening to the scientists. Since they are saying the world is heading for catastrophe. Where are the sensible voices that can hold short-termist politicians to the scrutiny required?

They do and always have gambled with our futures, which is wrong. A democracy isn't an embedded system, it is the safeguarding of the future in the people's and society's interests. If they don't know what they are doing, which they clearly don't, then they need to be swept away. It is right to do it.

I'm afraid that we are led by animals. A large swathe of the self-interested concerned primarily with self-enrichment. Others who will do whatever is propitious to save their own skins. And still others will depress the popular class interest out of ideology. And out of arrogance and entrenched elitism.

We live in a country of embedded privilege. We are clearly not alone. Some produce, others leech. They have us afraid to do without them, such is their manipulation of our honour and self confidence. We support each other: always have done. They need us, not the other way round. They should be locked up and tried instead of governing us.

If people would raise their voices for the healthy impulse for a future, to indeed rise up and overthrow dreary and pathetic oppressive institutions as it a democratic right to do so, emergency or not, and actually deal with the situation (oncoming climate change) then we might have a better chance. Which we deserve.
