Industrial music and its relationship(??) to fascism

He was on that mailing list in the nineties too, and I'd never quite understood how he parlayed his well dodgy aesthetics into a successful career.

hey Fozzie Bear, on a discussion about the Prurient article elsewhere, someone recommended this comic novella by our mutual (though sadly departed) friend Simon Morris - only just started it but reckon it'll be of interest to many in the thread, it skewers the scene very nicely. Do you know it? Seems to date from the mid-90s, though a lot of the cast & aesthetics are the same of course...

hmm although reading later pages it's worth noting it seems to be an 'affectionate homage' to the power electronics scene rather than simply a skewering. still, it's an enjoyable read nonetheless.

Yes that's great - he sent me it in the early 2000s. His afterword is really worth a read if the pulp fiction doesn't float someone's boat.

Simon was infuriating precisely because he could make a good case for all this stuff, at least in its earliest incarnations (and not the 6th generation photocopies you get in 2021).

I wouldn't mind rereading that article on the topic he wrote for your zine, which I've since lost - do you still have a copy?

As obscure/dodgy power electronics trivia goes, did anyone ever encounter Barzel? They were, uh, interesting on a conceptual level, I suppose? From what I remember, the music was more or less as enjoyable as any other power electronics is.

Looks quite good. There's definitely some fun to be had in the way something like Black Metal can be so ostentatiously transgressive but also so intensely conservative at the same time. I'm not surprised to see Drew Daniel is involved, it seems like a bit of a natural follow on from the Soft Pink Truth's BM covers album.

And more

Yes I enjoyed that. Really great to see someone being so honest and reflective. He’s unusual in that he no longer needs to appeal to the fanbase of his early bands I think (income-wise).

12 Rules for What interview about Siege with Spencer Sunshine, who has a new book out on the topic:

Goes into a bit of detail on exactly how deeply involved the likes of Moynihan, Rice, and Parfrey were involved with it. Along with Nicholas Schreck, who adds a much-needed touch of light relief by making it sound like that ogre bloke was somehow mixed up in all this.

ETA: for anyone who wants even more about Rice:
