So true...doesnt he take himself seriously? You'd think he was interviewing Nixon![/SIZE]

I can just see it:

The scene: Richard Nixon's grave in California. Garth Crooks stands beside the grave holding out a microphone. A camera crew are filming him as he opens his mouth:
Crooks: So Richard, you're dead. How do you feel about that?
Nixon:
Crooks: But if I can refer back to previous matches, how did it feel being forced to resign in disgrace after your role in trying to suppress the investigation into the break-in at the Watergate Hotel?
Nixon:
Crooks: But weren't you happy to avoid going to prison?
Nixon:
Crooks: I appreciate that; but some people might say that substituting yourself for Gerald Ford wasn't a good move.
Nixon:
Crooks: Anyway, how did you feel when you finally became President in 1969?
Nixon:
Crooks: Did it feel better than losing to JFK?
Nixon: Why didn't they cremate me?

:D :D :D

Did you see the panel when he was calling Arsene Wenger "the thin end of the wedge" for disappearing off down the tunnel instead of shaking Martin Jol's hand. He was almost apoplectic; it was like watching a latter day Colonel Blimp. "What an example to set the children, they'll be beating each other up all over Hackney Marshes tomorrow..." contd p94.

I don't mind Ian Wright. Obviously he talks rubbish but at least it isn't the same rubbish as all the others. I'd far rather have him than Alan Shearer or the now inescapable Jamie Redknapp.

More Steve Claridge is clearly the way forward though.

Wrighty is no good as a pundit, you need some neutrality and a critical eye. Saying Hargreaves must be blackmailing Sven to get into the team shows shocking disrespect.

Hansen has always been the one for me.

Why is it that no broadcaster seems willing to employ pundits who aren't ex-players? I'd rather hear the views of a journalist like Oliver Holt or Henry Winter, who has been good on the few times I've seen him do it. They seem less anxious about criticising their former colleagues.

Agree, also Richard Williams is pretty damned knowledgeable ....

i hear what you are saying but when some journalist, who was quite obviously the fat wheezy kid who was picked last at school, starts berating a player for not running to keep a ball in play in the 90th minute then you tend to disregard what they say - but when the person saying it hs won so many caps, who has played at the highest level and who knows that sometimes you have to cheat to get a decision from the ref - then it adds a little bit of weight to their argument.... IMO obv.

A tricky question for people: if you could choose either Ian Wright or Garth Crooks never to appear on TV again, which would it be?

Ian Wright

Garth Crooks has comedy value in that no black player can do any wrong.

I like Wright, it's his passion that I like tho, not his ability to analyse a games technical details.

As for the Blackmailing Sven part, he is only saying what the rest of the country is thinking, same as the diving aspect. I think that is what makes him great tho, he says what most England fans are thinking about after a match.

Perhaps, he could sing some passionate England songs at half time - that would please you? ;)

It is just nice to see someone talking about a game who actually seems to care.

Linekar is prob under orders to be impartial as the host, Hansen is scottish and probably really doesn't care, and no one else seems to display any emotion when it comes to England playing.

Nice to see a reflection of the fans passion on the TV.

To be honest, I would think Wright is responsible for much of the England enthusiasm lately as, like yawning and laughter, its very catching, when you see someone soo involved and so passionate about something, if you feel a little like that yourself you find it easier to be a little more like that.

I always tend to get more hetup about England games when Wright is on the TV then the games when he is not. When 5 boring blokes are sitting around talking dull technical details and showing no emotion, its pretty hard to get excited about a game, when you have someone who is just literally bubbling over with drive and passion, you can't help but feel excited yourself.

Didn't he host some wanky Saturday night show - are you saying that was good?

he was in "ian wrights excellent adventure" when him and someone else attempted to climb the highest point in the arctic - it deserverdely won the Best Mountaineering Film at the Kendal Mountaineering Film Festival - it was very very good to be fair, and probably what endeered me to him - christ knows it wasn't his performances in a celtic shirt.

That's a non sequitur. But apart from that, no I didn't watch his show, although I have seen it. He's a competitive, good-natured, generally good humoured sportsman who lets his football heart do his talking most of the time, and there's nothing wrong with that, but it's more suited to fanzine than punditry.
