I don't think it's that. They just can't be arsed.

They’re a bit weird about post office stuff over there. It’s not like it is here, where the post office is a part of traditional village life. When my brother eventually sent me something in the post (after literally years of me trying to persuade him to do it) he confessed that he’d never been into a post office and had always assumed it would be super complicated.

I've found someone in San Diego who will pick it up and send it over. Phew!

You would, unless you take your case to customs with proof that the coat originated in the UK and was only temporarily imported in to the US. Which seems to add to the faff somewhat...
