I need a tent but I detest camping - what shall I get?

I'm looking for a tent but it has to be a really good one - one I could go camping in Antartica with. 1 man/small 2 man. I don't even care what it costs. I'm sick of shit tents

How are you going to travel with it? Car, bike, hike? The main trade-off with tents is resilience v weight. Hilleberg, Big Agnes et al manage to square that compromise a bit by using more expensive fabrics, but even then the lighter you go, the weaker you go. If you want something that really is mountain grade, and you're not planning to be hiking for a week with it on your back, the Super Quaser is a very good option...but at 4kg, I'd find it a bit of a load for bikepacking or multi day hikes.

Can i gatecrash this thread please? I need to get a tent for me & my boyf. We want a 3 man tent (according to him), with porch area and enough space to stand up. Can anyone recommend anything? I've never bought a tent before! Don't really want to spend more than £80-ish.

Inflatable geodesic "Cave" tent from Heimplanet:

Pump up fun for only 500 squid. Awesome.
That would last like two seconds at a festival.

Hellsbells my tent  ive had a look at the quecha ones which mine is but i cant remember which model. its huge  plenty big for two with a decent sized porch, depends if you like pop ups or not? I got it from decathlon which is a nice place to go tent shopping as you can look at the tents set up :)

Whatever tent you get, if you want to stay cool in the mornings, peg 1 or 2 (depending on tent size) reflective emergency blankets over the top.

Bliss in the mornings (and slight added rain protection if the weather turns).

No. You don't need a gore-tex tent. I don't even know if they exist.

I second the Terra Nova suggestion, but if money really is no object have a look at a Hilleberg.
I've got a Hilleberg Nallo GT,don't even look at the price if you don't want to have a heart attack.I slept in it on a beach in the far north west of Scotland last week.I'm a bit of a outdoor gear nut and have Canadian military cold weather sleeping bag (some kind Canadian gave it to me) that's great as long as it doesn't go below -60c.It comes with an inner and outer bag either of which would be fine just about anywhere in the U.K. comes complete with air mattress (no mechanical parts it has a largish bag attached which you lift to fill with air then roll it up to pump up mattress) it also has sturdy rings attached which help make it an ideal raft if you have a raging torrent to cross. The bag it comes in serves as a large bucket if you have a need for that kind of thing.(I told you I'm an outdoor gear nut)

Still struggling to decide on a tent. We don't want a pop up one. It needs to be at least 3 man as we want enough space. And it must have a porch.
I've been looking at these:

Does anyone have any opinions/advice/recomendations?

Spend a little more if you can. Both of those have pretty shit porch areas. If you've got a few of you this becomes important as you need a space to put all your stuff!

advice?

don't borrow one off your mate who picked it up after glasto the year before.... it may turn out to actually be 2 unmatched flysheets without the correct poles, and you may end up waking up in the morning looking up at the sky trying to work out what's odd about the situation... then you click that the tent has actually ripped in half during the night.

Or if you do, then make sure it's a sunny glasto and take plenty of pills so you don't need to sleep anyway.

There's only 2 of us, but we want to be comfy. Can you recomend anything else then? What kind of price should we be looking at?

erm - it has no porch, is only for 2 and is pop up...:hmm: I'm very demanding with my requirements :D

I've got something similar to this, but a few years older. Light enough that if you have to carry it a short distance it's not overwhelming, tall enough to move, but low enough not to be taken out by strong winds and plenty of space to move around, but not so large it takes hours to put up.

I know it says sleeps 5, but that would be pretty grim. It's great for two people with proper mats and you can fit a third in without being to cramped, but I wouldn't want to do it for more then a night or two.

looks nice but a bit out of our price range unfortunately. Don't really want to spend more than £80

Ok. Normally I'd be happy to spend a while looking at tent porn for you, but I've got to grab an early night before a long shift. :(

If you're browsing, then try and find a budget tunnel style with a reasonable porch and life will be more comfy. I'm sure I've seen them in your price range, although you'll have to shop a little harder at this time of year.

Thanks. Will do. Can anyone recommend a good make to get me started though? I keep trawling through- hundreds of tents, getting nowhere

Post up some possibles. You aren't going to get an amazing make for that price but if you're driving and then using it as a fessie tent you don't need to worry about weight so much.

Something like this has a decent awning:http://www.squarekipper.co.uk/p-56-ultracamp-chamberlain-4-berth-man-camping-tent.aspx

Hard to know with out seeing them, but I'd tend towards the Coleman as well. It's still under 5kg which isn't that heavy and if it rains you'll appreciate the extra space.
