Eastern Florida to take a very severe hit from a major hurriance. Smallish chance it may reach catagory five, but it seems the main threat could be rain as some models have it stalling.

Its unusual for hurricanes this strong to hit the Eastern side of Florida, only a handful have. They are more frequent the other side due to the Gulf being warmer than the Atlantic in that region.

And roughly where's Mar-a-Lago on that map? :D

Somewhere among the homes of about 6 million people in the Miami Metropolitan Area.
We have differing values.
People can be evacuated. Ostentatious displays of wealth less so. Our values are perhaps more similar than you think...

ETA: and it's not as if any wish I might have that the hurricane passes a particular place is actually going to make any difference to the actual course of the storm, so it's not as if I'm likely to be causing suffering by enquiring where Mar-a-Lago is.

Kim Campbell, Former PM, Deletes Tweet About Hurricane Hitting Trump Resort

A former prime minister has caused outrage online after calling for a hurricane to hit the U.S. president’s Florida estate.

Kim Campbell, the first and only woman to serve as Canada’s prime minister, tweeted Wednesday that she was “rooting” for Hurricane Dorian to have a “direct hit on Mar a Lago!”

The Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach Florida is owned by U.S. President Donald Trump.

On Friday morning, Campbell deleted the tweet and apologized to anyone who may have been offended.

Just heard on Radio 5 Live winds at 185mph:eek:

Good luck to those caught in this.

Now joint second highest sustained wind speed (in the Atlantic Basin) and directly over the Bahamas. People there are going to have their lives devastated.
List of Atlantic hurricane records - Wikipedia

Edited 905 mb, again extreme end of Atlantic hurricanes. Most of these readings are done as the US still flies into tropical storms. Pacific and Indian Oceans storms are far less effectively monitored. There was lots of deep warm water for it to gain energy.

But the main threat to life is water, huge storm surges and rainfall kill more than wind. And off course the Pacific gets hit much harder with far less attention. But people tend to care about these kind of storms in the Caribbean and US as opposed to the ones that hit the Philippians and Japan.

Having battered the Bahamas, Hurricane Dorian is still a category 5, packing sustained winds of up to 165mph, and is heading towards the U.S., where it could cause a storm surge of up to 23ft, and there's idiots living of boats that are refusing to evacuate!

Totally nuts, considering the states of Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina have all declared states of emergency.

The hurricane has stalled over a populated area. But one in which there is still warm water to maintain its energy. I think its undergoing eyewall replacement, even then it has stayed at category 5. Hopefully there will be few deaths but this could be a very bad storm.

Coastal evacuations begin. Just seen this and thought it was something people often do not see, a motorway\highway being put into reverse flow to expedite the evacuations. FWIW current estimates are for wind speeds of about 60mph at Cape Canaveral but if they get the storm track wrong by 10 miles that could jump to 120 mph. That said a few meteorologists have pointed out that back in the late 90s the entire Atlantic coastal region of Florida and other states would have been facing evacuation.
