How many urbs live in Scotland?

Best of luck with that!! Have you got accomodation??

Sort of. I'm going to be staying with my brother and his family for a few weeks while I get myself sorted finding a decent flat near to where I'll be working - it's one of the industrial estates but I don't know which one. It's going to be important to move out quickly. Youngsters don't respect shifts!

I hope it's a really well paid job then. Rents in Aberdeen are mental iirc.

I'd be happy with a modest commute.

What do you term a modest commute?? Coz the whole area is mental and you sure as hell don't want to have to drive on a daily basis, unless 40/50 minutes to cover 5/7 miles is your idea of fun!! I hate being anywhere near Aberdeen at the wrong time! Really glad inlaws live in the south of the city and you don't need to go into it!

I live in what is now considered commuter belt for Aberdeen. It wasn't 10/15 yrs ago!! :(

I'm going to be working shifts, so rush hour is only going to be a problem 1/3 the time.

I'm in Aberdeen as well (originally from London). Driving is indeed mental here. The worst is the Haudigan roundabout. Proper bottleneck if you're there at the wrong time. If you do shift though it should be ok.

I've just learned that I'll be working in Altens. The wrong side of the river from my brother.

Right side of the river for me, or for you if you wanna commute from Angus! I'd guess you're looking at about an hour to get there at rush hour from your brothers. Was taking us about 45 mins to get from ARI(hospital) to the bottom of Anderson Drive about 4pm ish.

Hello adsr lurker person!! :)

I've been advised that the estates round there are very much on the rough side, and that as someone with a very English accent I would be less than welcome. I'm not so sure of the commuting problems from my brother's house: I'd be commuting the wrong way - from the centre of Aberdeen outwards.

gawd... i had to commute from peterhead to altens every day for about 6 months. that was one of the worst periods of my life...

going up Wellington Drive without stopping/being blocked by buses or cars turning right is a bit of an art form. ;)

Check out some of the past threads on moving to Aberdeen - I've posted quite a bit about the various estates/areas and the leasing agents to avoid like the plague.

TBH, Altens ain't the worst area to get to if you can find a place with a route that avoids all but a short stretch of the main road.

Unless it's changed in the last few yrs I suspect someone is extracting the micheal about Altens. Torry got gentrified in large lumps too afaik and Kincorth is fine. My inlaws bide there!!
Can you say fit like?? and d'ye ken fit a rowie is?? Research in this forum :D You'll be fine!!
Oh, and furry boots ye fae??

This is true - you get xenophobic cunts everywhere of course but TBH, one good thing about the oil industry is that Aberdeen ahs been a pretty diverse city for a long time now. Most folk have no problem at all about where you are from.

However, I would avoid the Langdykes pub in Altens on match days - It can get rather heavy in there!

I started a thread in the community forum about the possibility of arranging some Scottish meets (i.e. drinking sessions). I'd be more likely to take part in Glasgow/Ayrshire ones...

i'm in one of the three towns (the one that comes first in the alphabet, heh), where are you?

(not that i'm angling for a meetup, just curious)

I took a tour around Cove yesterday. Looks a niceish area, but I didn't have to go into the Langdykes to see that it's best avoided.

I grew up in North Ayrshire. But been living in England for about four year now. I miss the banter and my old pals :p But can't say I miss some other things like the general downer and depression of life in some parts from where Im fae.
