How long do uPVC windows last?

I think it can make sense yes; eaves boards often go rotten because no-one repaints them, and then you start getting problems with gutters hanging at the wrong angle and not draining properly etc. The main argument against PVC would be appearance - if it's just a simple straight board then I think you can get away with PVC but it would be sad to get rid of decorative wooden boards if they could be repaired.

Another option for these elements is powdercoated aluminium but that's not so straightforward as a replacement job.

That's what I wanted to hear. Rather than get it repainted soon, I shall wait for several years until it all starts to fall apart and then get plastic stuff installed.

Well the new windows have been installed. In the bumpf it says they're made with calcium-based stabilizers in the uPVC instead of the more common lead-based ones, which is interesting. I guess it might make a difference somewhere down the line.

First para, yes, absolutely, I think that is what is going on (one of those options) - which is kind of why I don't know what to do about it.
You can easily change the handle. I had one fail while still under guarantee it took all of a few minutes to replace.
