Help! being asked to pay £100 customs duty and import VAT on my own effing jacket

Oh I've done all I'm going to do. I tried. I made calls. I got angry. I failed. I don't need a jacket like it now till the autumn, so I'm going to forget about it, unless I bump into Mr HMRC wearing my jacket in a bar one night.
The only thing is, your buddy in the USA who sent you the jacket, if it is returned to them, they are likely to be charged for the return trip no?

I've no idea, but seeing as how this is panned out so far, I could imagine them being charged import tax!

They seem really aggressive on US parcels. It's completely put me off going on Kickstarters etc from the US - no matter how cheap and trivial the product, I always seem to end up stung for about as much as I paid in VAT and "fees". I have no idea why - it's like an undeclared trade war, it doesn't happen for shit shipped from China.

This particular case seems really absurd though, that's way more than seems justified.

I shipped 3 large boxes back from China, including 20 carving chisels (for wood), clothes, textbooks, 2 lamps, a foot operated hanging dremel type thing for carving (stone), an array of files, diamond disc and other stuff and... about 15kg of Jade in rough form. ~20kg per box... Not a word. 'Personal effects' innit.

e2a: wonder whether that's also to do with ground/ship freight vs air.

I used to buy vintage dress patterns from the states on Etsy but gave up after I started getting stung this way. Once you've paid the shipping, which also seems to have become disproportionately expensive, plus customs etc, you can end up paying over £30 for a £7 pattern.

And this is basically a second hand piece of paper

In case anyone was wondering, the jacket was supposedly sent back to the US some month ago where it has, of course, not be seen.

I guess someone's now got a nice jacket somewhere!
In fact I was. I was telling people about your jacket recently in work
Part of a Brexit discussion about yeah how great it will be trading more with the US... Not.

It will be in a postal warehouse somewhere (next to the Arc of the Covernant) so that mankind will never again be affected by its evil powers.

This has just reminded me of when I got a red card telling me that there was an item at the depot for me with insufficient postage.

Got there and asked for details as I wasn't expecting anything.

They said pay the £2 charge and I could find out.

I paid it.

It was a birthday card from an aunt. Probably cost her £1 to buy and add the cost of the stamps (yes it had stamps on it just not enough of em).

It cost me more to buy the card than her. She should have just rung me and told me to buy myself a card and what to write in it.

My great-aunt had to pay £2 to collect a birthday card her younger daughter had sent her (it was one of those '3D' ones, it had '80' raised up on little bits of sticky foamy stuff, and was just over the limit for first class (I'd have thought there must've been summat else in the envelope, though, first class is up to 70g isn't it…? Ages since I've posted anything).

You even have to pay import duty on gifts now. Last year my mother had to pay £34, I shit you not, to collect her Xmas pressie from her pen-friend in Arizona). I very much doubt the contents were worth that much.

could have been thickness. any package more than 5mm thick is 'large letter' rate now

I know I am at risk of being banned from Urban and being rightly accused of stating the obvious...

And trust me, I know all about this sort of thing, my husband can put something down and within seconds forget about it or lose it...

...but I think the best solution is to make sure you have all your belongings with you when you leave somewhere :D :D

(I am unsure whether saying *gets coat* at the end of this post makes it better or worse)

Try going on a nine show, three radio session tour right across America in ten days with the ensuing lack of sleep and see if you never ever forget anything ever. I've never lost a coat in my life, but lack of sleep and a relentless timetable means it becomes very easy to forget things in the almighty rush. The fact that the weather had gone from -10C to 20C made it easier to forget the coat too.

There is a happy ending to this tale. After months of relentlessly scouring eBay and online clothes shops I finally tracked down a brand new replacement jacket from a skater shop in Greece - same style/make but a slightly different camo pattern - and it cost me £65. Result!

After reading this thread, I need to see a picture of this jacket. I HAVE TO.

I'm sure they're going to be anti-climatic after the big story, but here's the one I left in San Diego and is now lost in transit for eternity:

And here's the one I bought. The jacket is exactly the same but the pattern is slightly different. Curiously, the new jacket has orange lining too.
I like the jacket because the top pocket can accommodate my Sony full frame compact which is handy for keeping it out of sight in dodgy neighbourhoods.
