Help! being asked to pay £100 customs duty and import VAT on my own effing jacket

You may remember I posted up the tale of how I left my jacket in the US . Happily I got a friend to post it back but now the fucking wankers at HRMC want me to hand over £33.85 in customs duty, £63.18 in Import VAT plus a 'clearance fee' of £12 before Parcelforce will hand it over.

Obviously trying to find a way to talk to a human and dispute this at HRMC seems impossible - can anyone help please?

I have no VAT number.

It seems this is a new thing. I had to pay more than I care to mention to bring back my stuff from New Zealand. It's daylight fucking robbery and I could not find a way around it.

Let me see if I can dig out the number I called. I did get to speak to a human.

Get a friend to report it stolen, then drop the charges once the jacket has been released to its rightful owner.

What they are asking you to pay seems way over the top though and I think there is something wrong there. It's one jacket right? I only paid slightly more than that for 3 big boxes full of stuff.

HMRC seem to operate a "guilty until proven innocent" policy on those receiving packages from outside the EU. And make it practically not worth the effort to prove innocence

Just give any 9 digit numerical reference, when it fails it should put you through to a human. eg 123456789

My sister has stopped sending gifts from Australia as the last lot she sent got impounded and the family had to go somewhere about 60 miles away to pick it up and cough up cash as well.
