Hastings! Where to eat, drink and be merry

Last time I went to Hastings it did this....we sat on the beach with fish and chips from the pelican and cheap wine from an offy in town and watched the sky darken, amazingly it didnt rain on us - the castle is worth a visit , view over the town from the top is good .

maybe you should hastings then tufty79 ! LETS HASTINGS! (might be drunk/over excited about seaside :D)

Ive been trying to figure in my head about the UK seaside experience compared to other nations (even the Portuguese dessiato !) do we have unique culture (which may now be dying now everyone has realised rock is shite :D) based around going to the seaside?

I really like Hastings. Ignore the naysayers! Haven't visited for a year or two but definitely do the funicular. The walk over towards Rye is beautiful, my most frequented pubs are the First In Last Out, The Dolphin and the Jenny all in the Old Town and try to coincide with some Sussex fireworks if you can!

there's another suspiciously Banksy-like thing in one of the alleys off Norman Road too.

And the fishing beach (where all the boats are on the shore) can be a beautiful wander.

Around the end of Claremont where it meets Trinity Street you can find Dyke & Dean (http://www.dykeanddean.com/) and The Print Works (http://www.theprintworkshastings.com/ - B&B & occasional events) and, if it's open, Jake Behnan's record shop.

If you would like to see a big block of flats in the shape of a ship you could go to St Leonards: http://www.theguardian.com/culture/2010/sep/04/marine-court-iain-sinclair-leonards

Posh b&b again at Zanzibar on St Leonards seafront, which has also opened a restaurant called Pier Nine that people seem to like: http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restau...zibar_Hotel-Hastings_East_Sussex_England.html

Plus the Royal Standard is a lovely pub.

Bump. Did a day out in Hastings yesterday with some friends and it was great (apart from the traffic on the A21 and the pterodactyl-like seagulls).

The Stade café on the seafront is pretty nice, though a bit pricey.

The real find was Mamma Putt's (African Caribbean restaurant which is actually in St Leonards, not far from Warrior Sq station) - really lovely food, including decent veggie options, and nice laid back friendly atmosphere. http://mammaputts.co.uk/

Does anyone here live in or near these area's, wots it like?

The internet seems to love and hate the place, difficult to say what's Daily Fail bollocks about chavs, druggers and immigrants and what's not, unemployment, social problems and hard-commuting seem to be a thing but mix of people, artists and writers, assorted oddballs and live music events also seem to be a thing. A crowded A21 would indicate the place is growing... Any insight appreciated.

Loads of the old Brixton squatters/activists moved down to Hastings and have created some interesting places but there's still no shortage of scrapping UKIP types around town. I like it there, although I expect Id get my face punched in at some time if I walked into the wrong pub.

Sadly some shitty paper declared it the 'New Shoreditch' a while ago so that's always a really bad sign. Rents are already 'in motion.'

Edit: found the link Why Hastings Is the Shoreditch of Sussex and the UK’s New Art Hotspot

(((Hastings)))

The quality of life and health benefits of being by the coast outweighs the problems commuting brings if im honest,it was okay until the dispute started.

Got a funnipiculiar for those that like cliff railways, and a lifeboat station.
Oh, and there was a big fight near there in 1066, and they sometimes do re-enactments.

Otherwise, not a clue about it.

They are getting better- I was shocked by the changes when I went down for the Pier opening- A Belgian Beer Bar, An arthouse Kino that seems to show Russian classics all the time, newish gallery- Jerwood- in the fishing village bit, decent deli and bakeries. The transport is horrendous, not helped by the narrow tunnel IIRC. IF I didnt work in Central London, I would seriously consider it

I shall be visiting on Saturday to do a gig and staying over to take in the sights and smells on the Sunday afternoon.
I've been recommended the following hostelries for a post-gig imbibement on the Sat night - opinions?

Crawleys by the station (indie/alt/metal)
Tin Tin (close by)
On The Rocks (also close by and gay-friendly/alt)
Fountain on Queens

I know nothing about any of them. Feed me info urban!
