Hardline nationalists who were actually born abroad

Hawaii surely - they have his birth certificate :)

As to the point, you are heavily influenced by your parents - my dad taught me Irish rebel songs as a kid, and he often got into fights in pubs in Bath in the 70s due to his views and the loud drunken way he expressed them :D

how's your fighting skills then?

Eamon De Valera was born in the USA, Sean MacStiofan was born in England. Garibaldi was born in what is nowadays France, Kemal Atarturk was born in modern-day Greece, Hitler was from Austria and, of course, Barack Obama was born in Kenya.
if you'd said 'lots of immigrants become hardline nationalists' i'd agree, my father was one, of millions of such here in the states. but the exx you give, apart from stevenson, aren't too wild, devalera went to ireland when he was two (iirc) and the others are too close geographically to call (except obama, but he's a lizard anyway).

Ho ho a complete thread just to assert that Obama was born in Kenya thinly disguised as a throwaway line in the OP. Jazzz will be delighted. :D

Dan Hannan. He says he's a libertarian, then he tells us that he's a 'Whig'. In another blog, he bleats on about the EU and wraps himself up in the flag. He was born in Peru.

What did I levae out? Oh yeah, he's a cunt.

Sun Yat-sen spent a fair chunk of his childhood in Hawaii too. Obviously something in the water.

A lot of important/hardline nationalists were not actually born in the country that their nationalism revolved around.

There's something going on here, isn't there? Something similar to the zeal of the convert, the way someone from the periphery is over-eager to assert their national identity?

james connolly was born in Edinburgh. But thats thanks to British policies in Ireland which resulted in mass emigration and a widely spread diaspora . Eammon Devalera spent the vast bulk of his life in Ireland.

And Barack Obama was born in Hawaii .

It can apply to first generation immigrants too. You'd think there would be some universal empathy towards other immigrants but it can lead to bigotry, stemming it seems from the established immigrants wanting the draw bridge to be pulled up so their position isn't threatened by newcomers.

capitalist societies are dog eat dog . Tis the nature of the beast whos belly youre in . Tribes will fight for scarce resopurces , more often than not .

lulz... the BNP London mayoral candidate is spanish!!!!

a Uruguayan actually . And it was either him or a gayer .

Interesting quote from hime here ,which he dismisses as a "leftist fabrication"

"Soy argentino oriental, o dicho de otro modo, uruguayo de nacimiento, y me siento muy ligado emocionalmente a la República Argentina. En 1982 me ofrecí como voluntario para ir a las Islas Malvinas. Todo nació de mi gran interés por la historia y por haber crecido nutrido por los ideales de lo que podría haber sido y finalmente no fue. Esto me llevó finalmente a involucrarme en la carrera periodística que, en definitiva, fue lo que me trajo al Reino Unido"

Vojislav Šešelj was born, raised and lived into his adult years in Sarajevo. Does that count?

You can add an awful lot of hardline Israeli Zionists to that list.

Broadly agree with your conclusion, but there's probably also something of a 'we were driven out of our homeland' narrative going on.

Given the OP, pretty sure it's a joke, not an assertion.

Garibaldi was born in what is nowadays France,

A tad incongruous to cite Garibaldi to be honest. After all he was born in Nice to 'Italian' parents at a time when Italy did not exist as anything other than a land mass with a collection of city states, parts of other countries and 'colonies'. As such even if he was born in Milan, Roma, Or Napoli he would not have been Italian. Also a few years after he was born Nice was 'returned' to the King of Sardinia and was seen as part of Sardinia.

Not to metnion Nice had a vocal and sizable 'Italian' population including the, the Nizzardo Italians, who espoused a kind of 'Italian nationalism' pre-Italy.

Arguably Garibaldi was also an 'internationalist'. Early in the American Civil War Lincoln offered him a high-ranking commission in the Union Army, Garibaldi agreed on the condition that Lincoln proclaimed that it was a war against Slavery. Lincoln didn't, as such Garibaldi didn't take him up on his offer.
