Going to London

Would they be open to doing day trips out of town do you think (or are they really wanting to see London since that's where they'll be based)?

They were thinking of going to Bruges on the train for a day.

they could hop on a train to my home town of bath, if they're staying at marble arch it's a short taxi ride to paddington station, and bath is about 80 minutes away

If they're here over a weekend then Spitalfields market in the East End is definitely worth a visit and they could also go to Columbia Road flower market which is nearby (sundays for these). Im a Londoner but I still cant get enough of going on the London Eye on the Southbank, it really is a fantastic way of seeing just how enormous London is. The Southbank itself is a stunning place to walk around esp at night with the views of St Pauls and the london bridges. Soho and Chinatown are good for drinking and eating places and then you have the obvious sites to see like the Tower of London, Hampton Court, Parliament and Big ben etc. They're staying in a good location which is right in the centre of things. I recommend buying a Timeout guide - this comes out weekly and give full listings of concerts, events, special museum exhibitions and loads more.

Hope they have a great time here :)

If they like baroque/classical music they might enjoy these:

The Wallace Collection often gets overlooked:

This might be of interest:

The area around London Bridge to Tower Bridge (mostly on the South side) has lots to do and see including Borough Market, The Tate Modern, The Globe Theatre, The Oxo Tower (great for view/photos), The Clink Prison Museum, HMS Belfast, Vinopolis and (obviously enough I guess) the Tower Of London and St Katharine's Dock. Shad Thames is worth a look and the Design Museum is there. The area around the Mayor's Building often has open air art exhibitions - I think there's aerial photography on at the moment. There's also a kind of sunken amphitheatre where open air free music is sometimes played.

If markets are an interest, Spitalfields has had quite a bit of development over the past couple of years and of course Petticoat Lane is very near there also. Camden Market is worth a visit too.

I'll have a think for some more.

that london bridge walk is excellent, i do it every couple of months :)

Send them to south kensington where there's the natural history museum, the v&a and the science museum v v close to each other. From there they can walk or get a bus to high street ken for slightly less stressful shopping than oxford street-it's also v close to hyde park, notting hill etc

Well thats 3 Londoners commenting on the Southbank so it comes highly recommended :D

I find when I get tired of London, a little excursion down the Southbank brings me back to rights.

This is true. Oxford St is very dull and uninspiring for the most part. If they like shopping then get them to head towards Marylebone High Street, Covent Garden etc. Oxford St just has the usual boring chain stores whereas you get more independant smaller shops in the streets mentioned.

There's also Maritime Greenwich - just a short boat trip up the river/DLR ride.

The Cutty Sark, The Fan Museum, National Maritime Museum, Old Royal Naval College, Royal Observatory, The Rangers House, Greenwich Park

AND

Greenwich market which is fab

edit: loads here http://www.greenwichwhs.org.uk/ and the Thames Barrier isn't too much further along ...

Btw.......Hello Derian*

Hello sheo   I was waiting for you  :D :D

A Brixton resident says... yeah they'll be welcome, as everyone is. It's not really a tourist destination, so they shouldn't expect to tag along behind a coachload of Japanese on a stopover between the Tower and the Palace, but there's a hour or so interesting wander round the market for the mildly adventurous traveller. I'd suggest saturday afternoon for the market (or indeed any afternoon except Wednesday which is early closing). TBH though, they'll possibly enjoy a mooch round the Tower and the Palace a bit more.

From Marlble arch they can walk down through Hyde park to Kensington Gardens taking in the Serperntine, Albert Memoral

(on the otherside of the road is the Royal Albert Hall this road would also get them to Harrods and the posh shops of Kensington)

and then Kensignton Palace, If they leave at the top end of the park they are in Notting Hill Gate and can walk down Portobelllo Rd - Saturday is Antiques Market day. I would recomend the market, some good bars and restaurants there too.

Its a long walk, using cabs you could cover it all in a good day out.

Perhaps I should stop now

Not on my account; keep it coming if you'd like.

Thanks to all for some excellent suggestions, and I'll take more if you have them.

Only one thing left to deal with: my intense jealousy that I won't be going, which is especially intense after looking at some of these interesting sites.

Yes! Then if it's sunny/mild a trip to Holland Park near Notting Hill and a relax there, visit to the Orangerie etc

A nice walk? starting in camden, a brief look around the market, walk town onto the regents canal tow path heading towards maida vale etc... takes you right past london zoo where they can see various animals for free etc hang a right walk up primrose hill for a damn fine view of London on a clear day, walk down other side and come out in primrose hill to do a bit of jude law spotting, grown up pubs cafes to explore etc

Fucks sake!

<flicks lemontops forehead :mad: :rolleyes: :p >

They are fairly near to Porchester Spa Turkish Baths review here if they want a nice relaxing day. Its quite traditional - odd mixture of down-at-heel and opulence from what I remember. The Turkish Baths are quite expensive (about £20) but you can swim in the pool as well without paying extra. The area around isn't that exciting, but there are some OK cafes etc & its near Hyde Park. Not sure if its worth it on a short visit as you definitely want to able to spend a whole afternoon there, but may be good in between more strenuous days.

John Soane's House is fascinating if they like architecture, or indeed just wierdness. It's not a big museum, just a 3 storey house on the north side of Lincoln's Inn Field. Its free AFAIK (maybe a small donation) & you have to ring a bell to be let in.

If they are around Spitalfields on the right day (1st & third Mondays & Sundays of the month) then Dennis Severs House might be worth a visit. Supposed to be more of an experience than just a museum. I've never actually got around to going  though I've meant to for years.
Spitalfields / Brick Lane is an interesting area, Columbia Road flower market is worth a visit on a Sunday as well, though it can be hellishly crowded - maybe better if you get there earlier in the day?
