Gezi Park - Istanbul

First time I watched it I thought he'd been crushed. Then I realized he's knocked to the side and limps off. Still, good reaction from the crowd in his defence.

Whether he was knocked to the side or not OMFG just plain wrong.

There are whole parts of Besiktas which have electricity cut off, the stream of Halk TV shows.

Soldiers from Hakkari - ie those engaged until very recently in fighting the guerrillas in Kurdish territory have sent out this picture:-

'Carry on resisting Gezi Park, the Hakkari soldier is beside you.'

Kurdish nationalist movement's current spokesperson Selahattin Demirtas has said there are those amongst the protestors who want to damage the peace initiative ie ceasefire between guerrillas and army, undoubtedly true. This has been warped by the 95% controlled government media into 'BDP claims protests are a means to ensure the military sabotages peace efforts'

You need a non-Turkey IP to access twitter so there's less comment than otherwise that I can see, but it's all getting quite mixed up - sort of like it was in 1996.

Around 500+ riot trained police have just arrived in Istanbul from Antalya:-

One hopeful photo (I'm not particularly :( ):
In Kurdish, Armenian and Turkish saying 'From Armenia salute to the resistance in Istanbul'

Bits of Okmeydani are being harrassed by police raiding apartments apparently (reliable I think).

The twitter is going mad with rumours apparently 20,000 police are going to go on an all out offensive in Besiktas Istanbul and nearby areas at 3am (1am here).

Police have begun an all out gas attack on a crowd outside Kocaeli another western city - about a 1000 people at half one in the morning outside the government party building.

Police are raiding Bahcesehir University's grounds right now - apparently it's revenge time.

There's not been a single announcement about arrest or release numbers in the past two days.

Several people are still in intensive care in Ankara hospitals after police confrontation this morning.

Hate to do just links with no commentary or anything, but watch this for showing how serious losing on the streets tonight might prove to be:

This is it from another angle - very odd situation - I can't really understand it:

A defoliant. In an urban setting. No they're not.

It's not a CNN report either and they say they can't back it up (no offence meant B_m)

This is another nonsense from the other side that's been picked up via twitter - it's an orange liquid that hurts your skin and makes you want to vomit but it's not Agent Orange.
In May Day a softer red version was used apparently.

The pro-government right just will not stop - apparently people with headscarves have been attacked on Barbaros Avenue, apparently BDP offices have been attacked by Turkish flag wielding hooligans ... all lies.

Their stuff is nauseating 'elections are the only means of making your voice heard' , what happened with your honourable not waiting for elections rushdie protests - 37 burnt to death
'let people who have to go to work go to sleep' your helicopters are the ones making the noise.

etc onward to nowhere ...

I went out onto the street, crowds of people united against the government. Old, young, people in wheelchairs, one woman with a bird in a cage... Incredible scenes. Among their many chants was "goodbye Erdoğan"....
A number of my friends and students are out on the streets in taksim and besiktas , this is going to be an incredible few days....

Also a reliable source an empty corrosive liquid vessel - mixed with water then sprayed from the cannons

there was a rumour that something had been put in the water cannons at the Genoa protests, I suspect there was...

Yeah, i have been wondering what that nasty, orangey looking stuff was in the water canons.

This is Adana from an hour ago this morning where the red liquid has been sprayed marking the ground:

Apparently it's psychological to remind people of blood to cower them to do nothing.

Alevi neighbourhood Gazi mahallesi was apparently out all night 5,000+ protestors blocked from marching elsewhere at 4am in the morning.

Taksim Tarlabasi has seen general anti-gentrification actions

Police are as I understand it out of Taksim square and back in their stations.

Kizilay Ankara still has police blocking it now after well over 100 hundred arrests there yesterday evening.
Over the course of the day in Ankara 400 people were hospitalised of whom 15 are still in intensive care this morning.

Lots of beatings of suspects carried out by AKP Youth wing (here on the right) with police threatening anyone who dares to come out of their block of flats with a beating and then arrest.

A sample AKP youth wing beating up a protestor it is difficult to get in and record this stuff, journalists have been arrested as a result, they have also come under attempts to clear them away by protesters over the day.

On the issue of media any shred of apparent siding with protestors can lead to arrest even for mainstream journalists. Kanal D - soft but consistently loyal government station - had its Ankara reporter Erhan Karadag arrested for sharing some of his milk and water against tear gas with ordinary spectators and protestors.

Amazing BBC headline and article generally:

Turkey assesses damage in Istanbul and Ankara protests

Turkish police have arrested more than 900 people during two days of protests, the most sustained anti-government outburst for years.

Interior Minister Muammer Guler said some of those arrested had since been released, others would be put on trial.

He said 26 policemen and 53 civilians had been hurt, one seriously. Violence flared after police cracked down on a protest over a park in Istanbul...

Possibly a silly question - but is there a chance that the military might use this as a pretext to depose of the government?

This is what happens with cuts to the BBC - this is their graphic to place it all geographically.

Only one source for figures the central Interior Ministry who put a 48 hour notice against the press for reporting an aerial bombardment massacre at Roboski.

From birds eye it also looks very green but each red square is like a six storey block.

Apparently the soldiers who might be conscripts or Hakkari volunteers/commandos (likely MHP fascists) were supporting the police. I don't know which is correct.

There was this fear in 2007 but now it's basically impossible, the chief of staff is Necdet Ozel, basically a supporter of the government, after the last chiefs of staff resigned/pushed out and pensioned before their term ended in 2011.

Turkey hasn't had an officer-led revolt since 1960 and there's no basis for it to happen now - officers are satisfied and taking part in all sorts of construction schemes.
