General Dulwich Hamlet chat

Actually I'm surprised we didn't get Chichester away, when we're already going there 4 days earlier for the league match. Discounting them (and Real Bedford, who our women visit for a league match in November) I had 7 potential new ground ticks: Sittingbourne, Thame, Walton & Hersham, Cambridge City, Felixstowe, Ascot, Biggleswade Town. I've done the first 4 of those clubs at their previous grounds.
Yes, that would have been standard to draw Chichester away in the Trophy with the league game imminent.

I keep forgetting that Sittingbourne have moved, so that would be 12 new grounds for me.

How come Lewes and Bowers & Pitsea had a league match tonight but no-one else did?

Doesn't look like it's a catch up as they are now on 8 games played and everyone else is on 7.

Wild guess. They’ve moved the Bonfire Night game? For pyro reasons. (Ie their famously ultra fans wouldn’t be able to source enough on the night)

The Bonfire Night game was against Bognor Regis, and was put back a week to Tuesday 12th November. A fluke of the fixture list meant all 11 games were postponed due to FA Cup ties two Saturday's ago (including our trip to Chichester) and this is the only one rescheduled for this week, with 5 more next week (including our trip to Chichester) and 3 the week after that.

But there is no Lewes game 5-Nov. Yet others (inc DHFC) are playing….?

Bonfire Night would not be a sensible night for Lewes to play. The town basically comes to a halt for bonfire night celebrations. A few years ago the police were actively discouraging people entering Lewes that night, due to overcrowding, and may have concerns about a Lewes game that day.

You are able to request not to get home matches on set days - with good reason. Perhaps Lewes forgot Bonfire Night was a match night. I believe Hamlet used to ask for an away fixture on the last Saturday before Christmas, Sainsbury's used to be either the busiest or second busiest in England that day.

They probably didn't expect a round of matches to be scheduled for that midweek. Given that the only other complete round of midweek fixtures was in the very first week the season, it looks totally random in the calendar and an odd date for the fixture compilers to choose.

The Lewes bonfire night is hardly a secret and it's basic common sense never to allocate them a home game on 5th November. (The same probably applies to the whole of East Sussex.) In fact I'm sure quite a lot of other places throughout England will have big fireworks displays that hit attendance figures, even if they don't actually make it impractical to host a football match.

I think there was a televised FA Cup first-round match last season that had a fireworks display (and concert?) taking place in the park next door, which looked a bit odd watching from home.

Binfield have shipped 14 in their last two league matches. They were very poor at Farnham. Binfield tried to suffocate Farnham into a small part of the field. Farnham simply passed the ball through the defensive line, which was far too high, and ran on to the ball. The referee stopped the second half at 44.59, by the electronic scoreboard, to spare Binfield more misery.

Binfield looked doomed for most of last season but put together a brilliant run late on to save themselves. If they don't improve dramatically on what they did at Farnham, they will be strong relegation candidates this season. Perhaps fortunately for them, there looks to be a few weak teams in their division.

Have to say that I'm really not a fan of this recently introduced style of clickbaity posts on Facebook;

A date has been set for our London Senior Cup clash with Leyton Orient.

Why not just say the date in the post?

It’s crossing over from seeing people as supporters you’re trying to help (give them information they want quickly) into seeing them as assets you’re trying to monetise (make them click links and generate you ad revenue).
Pricks.

Edit to add: I wonder how much extra carbon is burned doubling the amount of pages several thousand people need to visit every time they tweet something like that.

Maybe it's just because what I'm used to in this social media age but it doesn't bother me much given the size/status/reach of the club.

I.e. I'd be much more bothered and see it as unnecessary if was a Premier League club for example.

Yes, it's a really shitty way to treat fans. There's absolutely no reason why they can't include the paragraph or two they've linked to in the original post.

Here's another totally pointless, time-wasting bit of clickbait:

Why not just embed the YouTube video on the Facebook page like everyone else and save people wasting their time?

Actually it wasn’t ‘crossing over’ for any gain to the club, we recognised earlier this year that as the state of online platforms was deteriorating with abusive posts to the extent that we had to discuss stopping using them we should start a move to being more reliant on our own website so more fans got their information from us directly and insure against the impact of losing contact with fans by having to stop using a toxic site at short notice.

Dave built us an amazing website and we want to make sure we put as much content on that and have one place we can make sure is always up to date and a reliable source for fans.

I can reassure you there wasn’t a single discussion on clicks or revenue, that’s not us.

Sadly our club and staff are increasingly criticised and abused online and so creating a safe online environment where fans can receive information without reading the accompanying abuse is important to me personally.

I am sorry our efforts to do that have been misconstrued and ironically prompted more abuse.

You can see how hard that is to believe though. Every other company / outlet doing it that way is doing it for clicks and ads, but Hamlet is apparently different.

And notwithstanding wanting to show off the website etc, the tweet can still say the key details and then link, it doesn’t need to contain no information whatsoever. Just adding the date and ko time isn’t going to unleash the trolls.

Which part of our website are you claiming makes us money through clicks?

I messaged the media team some time ago about the use of X, which is probably the most sewer like of the social media outlets. We apparently have a Bluesky account which has not been used for some time. Could this not be reactivated, if for nothing else than to provide the information for men's and women's games currently on X. Bluesky looks like X, works like X but, so far at least, isn't full of the rubbish currently being peddled on X. The account name is
@dulwichhamletfc.bsky.social - it's been inert for 9 months, though it still appears to be active. It's a friendlier place to be - sort of like DHFC!

Thank you. Yes, we had a long discussion about how appropriate it was for a club with our perspective on life to be present on X which is why we made the change to be self sufficient as these platforms can turn toxic remarkably quickly. I don’t know Bluesky personally so will take a look.

The bit where the club can say “X hits on socials / website” to potential sponsors having inflated those hit counts as per the above.
We don’t sell online sponsorship and all of our sponsors support us because of what happens at Champion Hill not online.

Clare who looks after all of our sponsors makes our club a wonderful place that people want to be a part of and I can guarantee you she couldn’t tell you how many ‘hits’ we get let alone ever use that information as you claim. She just welcomes people in person like they are family and they love her and the club for it. As do I.
