Funicular railways of the UK and elsewhere

I didn’t get off today though. Also I train is 62 minutes late and the Wifi isn’t working. So much for teutonic efficiency...

ETA I put this double post on the wrong thread! But will leave it as a monument.

Viano do Castelo is a nice one, largest in Portugal at 150m up, 650m long. Cars are a bit shit and modern looking, there’s an older one sat next to the top station. Cracking view from the top.

If the gradient is more than 45° then I'd start calling it an elevator, really.

Hastings ones are kind of pointless west hill has a crap cafe and a play ground east hill doesn't even have that it's just a cou try park

Jealous of the Constitution Hill Trip. A380 - I think I'll try for a visit the next time I'm vaguely in that area. I failed when I was there as a student a few decades ago, although I sat on the Trig Point and spoke to a guy in Ireland - using a 2m ham radio, which was interrupted by a heifer chewing the back of my coat. Guy laughed at me telling bovine to "go away" ...

My trip on the CAT one was interesting, but it was sadly utilitarian, and I didn't see any significant level of "interpretation" and the person in the ticket office wasn't very communicative ...

I must go to CAT again - I went when I was about 14, and loved it.

I hadn’t been for over 25 years. Was dropping Ms A319 off for an introductory module of a post grad course. The guy on the gate let us in for nothing! It’s close to you I think? I wouldn’t drive more than 90 minutes just to visit, but they do a lot of courses which look good.

It's a good 2 hours from here - probably 80-90 miles. But I've got friends and step-relations up that way, so it could be combined into another trip.

Cafe looked nice…

Cafe is Vegan, a bit pricey but very nice.
CAT allow dogs (on lead / well behaved) but not in the caff ...

Plenty to see, but the "interpretation" is substandard [unless you follow their POV already] and some stuff was missing / broken. Unlike my previous visit the place was a ghost town, which is why it needs proper info displays. [sorry, a pet peeve of mine is when places assume a lot of prior knowledge by their visitors - the NRM, esp at locomotion, is/was another offender !]

Don't go if it is wet, or has been raining recently (esp the night before) the paths can be slippery.

It might be a post Covid thing but the cafe is no longer vegan.

We had some local ice cream.

Oh. I was there in September 2019, and that particular day it seemed to have only vegan items on the menu.

It might be a product of who-ever runs it (possibly franchised out if CAT doesn't have the staff / volunteers to run it anymore)

there's a couple of good ice-cream places in Aberdyfi (ditto Barmouth)

Picked up MsA319. Funicular is apparently now closed for the season, so we just made it…
