Fruit or Chocolate Cake for Mum's Birthday Help!

This is a really easy cake, and probably passes Looby's stringent cake-o-meter rules.

I made it with lemons instead of clementines - a beautiful cake.

Yeah, I love fruit cakes like apple or lemon. I'm not very keen on fruit cake fruit cake -- find it far too heavy.

Nigellas Guinness cake is piece of piss and chocolatey. You can do it n half pint glasses to give it the full effect if you have a few of those.

Would a fruit cake have to be a trad ‘fruit cake’ or could it be anything with fruit in? Lots of lovely apple cake recipes.

Ooh I’ve done v similar to that a couple of times, must try it with lemons.

I like fruit cake (loaf) - and was introduced to having Wensleydale cheese with it a few years ago - and I can bake a mean loaf.

Funnily enough, me and OH both like fruit cake, but my FiL didn't get on with dried fruit in anything, unlike his brother. At crimble auntie J had to bake another fruit loaf to keep her OH out of the official cakes, I baked him several fruit loaves as a thank you for helping with a motorbike repair that took some months to complete ...

I also like any manner and form of cake, including cheesecake ... but when watching one's waistline, rationing of consumption is required.
Special exemptions for birthdays and anniversaries !

MumBadgers birthday on Sunday and she wants a cake as a 'present' when I see her tomorrow :hmm:

I asked her what she wanted and she said 'fruit or chocolate' which is a broad remit! My repertoire is limited to banana loaf and carrot cake which are not that fruity or chocolatey
If your repertoire is banana loaf or carrot cake, I'd stick with one (or both) of those at this point.

I'm not your Mum, but if I was, I'd rather have a well made but simple cake than an elaborate cake that didn't turn out right.

And then spend some time practising and broadening your repertoire so you can make her something more elaborate on her next birthday.

Yeah don't think I'd go that far. Sponge cake is fab. All cake is fab. Just sponge cakes as wedding cake is weird to me.

I love sponge cakes, the queen of cakes. At our wedding Ms747 and I had a multi tiered fruit cake but with, get this, one tier of sponge cake. Thumbs.

I made a wedding cake for a friend. His sister didn't like fruit cake so the top tier was a Madeira cake.

Gagging for a cake now. Any cake. Well, apart from Battenburg obviously.
Are you one of the legion of weirdos who don't like marzipan?

Which is also often a problem among the celebration fruit cake hating folk as well.

Yes, I think it stems from never actually knowing what it was made of when I was a kid and being cruelly tricked into thinking it should be nice, because look at all that snowy peaked icing on top of it....and the rosy cheeked Santa figurine. Crushing disappointments at Christmas time over and over again.
