French cars...

Anecdote is not data, etc, but an ex-bf had a Citroen ZX and the electrics were a bit dodgy on that, can't recall exactly what was up with it though.

The trouble with all cars today is that they are all much of a muchness and there is so little to choose between any of them. Many cars share various bits n pieces. There will be good and bad in every make. Alfas had a notorious reputation but in the few years I had my brera it never gave me cause for concern.
For those who didn't check links, the Ami.

I'd rather get a bus than drive that, that is hideous, and claustrophobic, and I'm going to stop because I'm amazed at how fecking ugly it actually is :D It's worse than a Johny cab!

My only experience of a french car is ancient, I've been driving VWs for 25yrs ish, I have no desire to change.

Thanks for all your honest replies, they've been very helpful!

I bought it today. Managed to speak again to the dealership that looked after it, to the actual mechanic that did all the work. He put my mind at ease regarding it's history and single previous owner... Armed with a wad of cash and a bank card, I jumped on the first train to manc, and bought the thing without even test driving it. I had a good look over it first of course, had it running etc. Drove it back to Stoke, not a blip. Salesman asked me to get in touch if I ever choose to onsell it, which is usually a good sign. I negotiated 3 month platinum warranty on parts/labour including electrics and mechanics, got 12 months breakdown cover and 300 off the list price. 12 months mot and 6 tax. It's completely boring, plasticcy and bland, but at the same time very spacious and has some well thought out features. Ideal for what we need it for. I can't see my self getting emotionally attached to it, which is probably a good thing.

I used to have a job dealing with new car complaints for Peugeot and citroen cars or vans, and old cars of any make. Can't say there was any surplus of p & c or French cars amongst the used ones, they all got various problems. The exception to that being the DS3s and DS4s. Absolutely riddled with consistent complaints, inside and out. Avoid them like the plague!!!

Many years ago I had a Peugeot 309. A great and reliable car. I traded for a 405, also good although it had issues which were fixed under warranty. I did over 250k in it.

I'm currently driving a C1 hire car. It's tiny, but a great little car.

In both my experience and opinion French cars are neither especially better or worse than any other in the "ordinary" car market.

Sounds like a sensible purchase! Good you got money knocked off. Get it for under 4k? I think it'll hold its value for a few years tbh.

Paid 2.7 in the end. 160k with an absolutely rock solid sevice history. The last owner was fastidious in his maintenance... The stereo was set to Radio 4 when I got in. Make of that what you will!

I currently have a Clio which is a total bag of shite. The worst car I've had in 30 years. It spends more time in the garage than on the road. It's currently sitting out in the road with a flat battery as the cunt turns its own lights on after its parked up.
