Forgot to put your seatbelt on?

Having begun driving a car and foolishly realised you have made the error of not putting on your seatbelt, which of the following two methods should you use to put your seatbelt on?

a) While accelerating rapidly, reach behind your right shoulder with your left hand to grab the seat belt. While pulling the seatbelt with your left hand, take your right hand off the steering wheel and pull the belt over your right arm. Look down to your left and with your left hand clip the belt into position, then replace one or more hands on the steering wheel and (optionally) check your rear view mirror to see how many small children you have just run over.

b) Pull over where it's safe, convenient and legal to do so. Stop the car, and put your seatbelt on. Move off when you're ready after making the appropriate checks.

I have seen quite a bit of a) recently, so just wondering if that method is common amongst Urbanites?

I can't say I ever forget to put my seat belt on tbh. It's as automatic for me as closing the door. When I'm at my allotment in the car I often instinctively put it on, only to have to drive a few meters down a track and take it off again to open the gate.

But if I did forget then obvioulsy a.) But just to be on the safe side I'd push my knee up to the wheel to help steering

Perhaps if you had no dependents, it could be more responsible to drive without a seat belt as an extra commitment to driving carefully.

Yeah, same as.

I guess that people who started driving before wearing them was compulsory are more likely to forget?
Although a lot of cars nag you by beeping if you forget anyway.

I go for a regularly, cause i usually do whatever manouvering i need to to get out of where i've parked before putting the belt on.

You'd think so, but my partner proves that wrong. She often forgets, especially if she's the passanger, and sits there oblivious with the car beeping away

Huh?

I just drive along, grab it with my right hand, and put it into the locking mechanism. After doing it so many times, don't really need to look. This of course applies to a left hand drive vehicle.

I didn't have my seatbelt on a few weeks ago. I get pulled over, and next thing, two officers are approaching with their hands on their guns. It's my freaking seatbelt, for fucks sake!

The easiest way to reduce road accidents to zero would be to remove all seatbelts and install a razor sharp 8" spike in the middle of every steering wheel.

I put the seatbelt on first, then start the car. I don't find it particularly difficult to move around and look about with it on.

Or you could make them out of crumply tin foil and fill them with explosives. Oh wait, they did do that...

How do you do that without taking your other hand off the steering wheel

I don't know what your seatbelt assemblies are like. Ours are lap/shoulder. When not in use, the buckle on the belt is on the door pillar just above shoulder height. I just grab it with my right hand. Left hand stays on the wheel, eyes on the road. I pull it straight across my body, then down into the locking mechanism. Even if the car isn't moving, I never use two hands to put on my seatbelt.

Rather surprised to see you suggesting that - if you're serious, that is. It's normally something advocated by rabid anti-car types. It's the same kind of logic that suggests uncomfortable cars keep drivers alert and good brakes encourage careless driving, and it's equally flawed.

We've also been there before - or near enough. Here's the interior of a Morris Minor:

No seatbelts - on the earlier models at least - no collapsible steering column and a nice big boss in the centre of the wheel to impale the driver in the event of a collision. And yet, the rate of road deaths now is half what it was when they were still making the ol' Moggy...

Well you have to take your other hand off the wheel briefly to put your arm through the hole (even you JC3) - but it's seconds. Actually I pull it with my right hand and then transfer it to my left, thinking about it. So I pretty much always have at least one hand on the wheel.

This just shows how unaware you are of your own driving habits. You need to put an arm through the seatbelt in order to fit it properly, to do this you need to take that hand off the wheel.

It would be even lower if we banned "classic" cars entirely ;)

:hmm:

no - it automatically puts your arm into the seatbelt. The lap and shoulder harnesses are one unit.

Whatever :D

Every time I see a driver putting on their seatbelt whilst their vehicle is in motion they are blatantly not in proper control of their vehicle.

but if your hand is on the steering wheel, you have to take your hand off the wheel to fit the belt over your hand

One hand on steering wheel, one grabs the belt and slides it over your body to click it in.

Actually, I put my seat belt on before I start the car. I'm going by the actions of my kids when they forget.
