I literally cannot believe the latest post from FLAF anti fascist football website and shall end this saga with one final post from them with my response underneath. Given that my main motivation was always to try and build bridges because I ADMIRE the stance of Celtic and St Pauli so much one part especially concerning 'Englishness' is beyond belief, as is the idea that I would threaten people 'on the fly', despite being subject to insults and abuse. This page has always promoted intelligent debate, openness and dialogue and will continue to do so. Despite their attitude to me I wish FLAF well in future antifascist work.
I will have no further contact or communication with them after this.
Here goes. Their post.
Attila the Windbag
We’ve tolerated John Baine (aka Attila the Stockbroker) on this page for more than 5 years.
We kicked both the Attila account and his John Baine monicker off the page this week after reading his apologia for St Pauli, Israel & the Gaza genocide.
Since FLAF was founded John has continually tried to undermine us politically by floating his liberal positions on the Labour Party, Israel & mainstream antiracism.
In that time, not once did this self-proclaimed ‘lifelong antifascist’ offer to play a benefit for us, let alone turn up for an action against fascists.
His megalomania & passive/aggressive manner might fool his more devoted followers into believing the tales he spins. However, there’s a few of us in FLAF who go back as far, if not further, with the antifascist movement than this windbag. We know what Baine’s contribution was to antifascism, some of us were there.
He literally makes things up, in order to inflate his own role in the movement. The truth is somewhat different. He played no central or leading role in anything. He is a bit-part player with a mandolin & some rhyming words. And the biggest pub bore you’d ever be unlucky enough to meet.
He has remained in the Labour Party throughout at least two major witch-hunts against the left. His wife is a Starmerite labour councillor. His radicalism is a facade, an act.
More recently, the egomaniac has been pontificating about Gaza & St Pauli and trying to defend his and their indefensible position.
He is not a supporter of the Palestinians, in spite of his nonsensical advocacy for the two-state solution. Those who raise this issue now knowingly do it because they know it to be a virtual impossibility. Netanyahu says it will never happen, despite Israel being in favour ‘on paper’. The two state solution means physically removing 750,000 fanatical settlers from the West Bank, but that never occurs to the great Baine brain.
Further than that, when asked what solidarity he’s shown for Gaza since the full scale Israeli invasion, Attila replied that he reads a poem about Palestine at his gigs. Seriously.
He stated on this page that he will not share a platform or stage with any artists who do not share his views on the two state solution. Translated that means he will never play a gig for Palestine, because within the Palestinian community there are countless debates & ideas about how to achieve their freedom, the two-state solution being only one of them. Attila was accusing others of ‘dogmatic positions’ on colonialism the other day. What’s his ‘two state solution’ other than a dogmatic position that copper fastens apartheid?
Attila/Baine is also wrongly attributing responsibility for the rift within antifascism to Celtic supporters & their fan organisations. Again, this is a lie. The issue at St Pauli was with their own international supporters clubs, which were outraged at the club’s position on the invasion of Gaza. John Baine knows nothing about the links between St Pauli & Celtic, or why they soured in recent years.
The Green Brigade, TAL Fanzine, Irish CSCs, had all cut links with St Pauli’s ultras and the vehicle they use to support their friends in Israel, the Alerta Network. This took place a decade or more before the Israelis invaded Gaza in October 2023.
The currrent rift has nothing to do with Celtic, but Baine is determined to make it so, because he’s trying to harness the hatred many of his English readers will have for Celtic & the Irish community. He knows his audience.
Baine is playing the victim because he’s been challenged politically. He holds forth on political irrelevancies in his long-winded posts, which normally conclude that the highest fence is the safest place to sit in any debate.
We are also hearing of Baine physically threatening people who disagree with him, on the fly. We’re warning him now to desist with the private threats, or face the consequences.
You have been told. We know you’ll see this post John. Don’t push your luck.
My response
What rubbish. I haven’t physically threatened anyone - it’s not my style, and at 66 I wouldn’t be much use anyway.
And what the hell is the rest of it about? It breaks my heart that I even have to write this, but since you have questioned my commitment, I shall.
I never claimed to ‘play a central role’ in AFA. I predated it by years, starting with organising Rock against Racism gigs in 1977/8/9 and taking my antifascist message where it needed to go - punk and skin gigs where fascists were active - from the very start of my time as Attila in 1980, doing my poems and songs, trying to win over kids conned by the Far Right. See cutting below. No backup whatsoever apart from my mate Pixie who saved my arse that day. AFA weren't even born.
After that I took the decision to put my anti fascist poem ‘Andy is a Corporatist’ on an ‘Oi’ album back then precisely because I knew it would reach the people who most needed to hear it - and many people have thanked me for it.
But as well as changing a lot of minds I got a lot of stick after that. Not at organised anti fascist events with back up but on my own at gigs in many different towns where I was randomly targeted by the local boneheads. I stood my ground with the local people and was proud to do so.
And I was also proud to give my support as a performer to the organised anti fascist movement as it grew - from the original Hilltop mob in Hatfield to RA to AFA. I never claimed to be a ‘central figure’ in it! I did benefit gigs, was thankful for the protection offered in London for a short while after some nasty incidents on my own, and always gave support when asked. All through the 80s and 90s when fascist activity was at its peak at gigs. You know that. Miners’ strike, Wapping etc too.
And I have carried on ever since. 43 years. I tried to build bridges because I have huge respect for Celtic AND St Pauli - it’s not an English/Irish thing, that’s a ridiculous and offensive conclusion to draw. I do believe in a two state solution as the only possible option: you disagree.
And down here we’re not Starmerites. There was virtually no Labour Party here before Corbyn was elected, we joined en masse and we’ve now won two councils and can do practical work to make people's lives better. My wife is a wonderful, caring woman doing wonders in our community and why you brought her into this I have no idea.
I literally cannot believe that you have written as you have, or that I have had to write as I do in response.
