On what was the hottest day of the year, Victoria Gardens in Leeds city centre became the focal but not so vocal point of around 45 far right sad sacks under the leadership of ‘Hull Hitler’ Alex Yerbury following his recent split from Patriotic Alternative.
The assorted toothless pissed up representatives of the master race stood around by the war memorial giving Nazi salutes and generally being as obnoxious as possible. A counter demo of around 200 anti racists from Stand Up To Racism, local trade unions & activist groups were on the other side of the square and the usual insults were exchanged under the watchful eye of several hundred police, some on horseback.
The heat increased somewhat with the arrival of a 40-strong group of FLAF stewards made up of both lads and lasses committed to confronting the fascists, who by now were looking rattled and very red faced. A combination of too much booze and sunstroke or perhaps just being very angry hateful fucks. Who knows.
Our group got within twenty yards of the assembled meatheads before the police realised we were not of the same persuasion and quickly surrounded FLAF pushing us away from any potential meaningful engagement.
The FLAF stewards group were escorted by a ‘moving kettle’ operation surrounded by a wall of cops & mounted police around us too. Eventually we were slowly walked to the other side of the library towards the back of the Anti-Racist counter protesters who at first weren’t sure if the police were pushing right-wingers towards them. This was quickly transformed into a very friendly atmosphere when faces on either side of the police line were recognised. We’d like to thank the comrades who remonstrated with the police for us to be released from the kettle to join them.
The spirit of working class unity was evident from the speeches made from an open platform, meaning just about everyone got a word in, including a FLAF speaker who got a great reception to his appeal for antifascist unity & action against a fascist movement that has clearly set itself against the interests of the working class:
“Fascists are the bosses slaves, they only see what’s in front of their eyes. They don’t do joined up thinking. They see refugees on boats, people in hotels, the homeless - all in isolation. They’re too stupid to realise that it’s the same people at the top who’ve been fcuking us over since Thatcher was in power who are fcuking over refugees & the working class today.”
Ultimately, it’s the police who proved to be the biggest gang in town on Saturday and it was pretty much game over in terms of actual confrontation. There were a couple of incidents where antifascists were pulled by the police, but no charges made. The police have certainly learned from the last encounter in Leeds when they walked us straight into Patriotic Alternative’s hotel protest, much to the alarm of the gathered fascists.
Thanks to all the activists who travelled to Leeds. We will be back.
