Football and coronavirus

Football in the U.K. isn’t affected yet aside from shaking hands however other countries have taken a different stance . Some Europa League games are to be played behind closed doors , some Serie A games behind closed doors, same in Ligue 1 in France , Switzerland and in Portugal this is now being considered .
Those clubs whose games are televised will recoup some income but those more reliant on attendance are going to take a hit and for those who rely on attendance and game by game TV rights are going to be shafted.
Further restrictions might lead to games being postponed all together.
The Euros start in June so we could be in a position where some Leagues have to make a decision on whether to try and complete the Leagues or push for abandonment of the Euros.
Thoughts/ Comments ?

It is ridiculous to talk about playing football matches etc behind closed doors or cancelling them altogether whilst 5 million people a day use the tube and millions more commute on over-crowded trains.

At some point, the situation will reach the point where "only essential travel" is permitted. Are they waiting until deaths/cases reach a particular number? In which case why the fuck aren't non-essential workers being told to work from home now, to stop those deaths/cases?

(it's OK. I know the answer)

The Primeira Liga ( Portugal) are due to make an announcement regarding their position on the coronavirus. Events in Portugal with 5,000+ people are set to be abandoned/postponed. Primeira Liga matches will therefore either be played behind closed doors, or suspended until a later date.

Was thinking about this, when Liverpool actually win the Prem, the fans are going to want to celebrate on masse, wherever, whenever. Who's going to stop such huge spontaneous gatherings?

And why is Cheltenham race festival happily going ahead?

Ah, apparently they will be clear by the weekend as they met him last month. They have played us since then though. Interesting to see if we do anything (we won't)

Season's going to be cancelled isn't it.
Euro's will be postponed a year, and leagues allowed a delayed finish, imo. The cost to lower league clubs would be enormous if the season was cancelled, there'd be a few more Bury's and Bolton's.

From The Times

All football matches in England will be played behind closed doors under government plans to combat coronavirus that could be triggered as early as today.

A meeting of the government’s Cobra committee this morning is expected to move its response to the pandemic from the “contain” phase to the “delay” phase. That will result in a crisis plan being unveiled for football. The Times can reveal:

● The current season will not be postponed and instead matches in the Premier League and lower divisions will be moved behind closed doors;

● All Premier League season-ticket holders and ticket holders for individual games will be able to stream coverage of matches into their homes;

● No games will be shown in pubs so as to avoid congregation of people;

● Premier League games will not be shown live in the 3pm slot on Saturday afternoons;
● Broadcasters will be permitted to screen more than one Premier League game during both the lunchtime and tea-time television slots on Saturday, and the scheduled slots on Sundays and Mondays; and
● Season-ticket holders and ticket holders for individual games at Football League clubs will be allowed to watch matches on iFollow streams.
The plan may be implemented once the number of UK coronavirus cases passes 500. Last night it stood at 460.

The NBA just postponed its season - they would be utter fools to allow any more football games to be played right now, with an audience or not - if one player on any team gets sick, which seems almost guaranteed to happen very soon, then it's going to be self-quarantine for every player on that team and every player on every team they've recently played.

This is shit. Tickets to see Fulham tomorrow night, and would be going to Dulwich Hamlet on Saturday. So thats the weekend pretty ruined.
Is the game cancelled or behind closed doors?

Wasn’t going but am meant to go to the Bees v West Brom game next Tuesday.
