Female Rappers?

Have heard good things about her before ... or am I thinking off MC Chickaboo ...?

I'm a bit confused now - it could well be Chickaboo, seeing as I've only seen here announced on stage once. And that may explain why I haven't been able to find out much on her since.

Anyway, she's fucking good, whoever she is. Commands a crowd with a growling delivery and a wicked glint in the eye.

Dubplate Drama 2 is set to air end of summer, for all Shystie fans!

Cookie Crew are a class act in my book. South London too!

And I would highly recommend some Queen LAtifah stuff from back in the day - DJ MArk 45 King and KRS ONE on production - propper lyrics too.

....Let's talk about sex, baby Let's talk about you and me Let's talk about all the good things And the bad things that may be Let's talk about sex...

No-one's mentioned Bahamadia yet... her first album had some nice tracks on it.

Oh yeah, The Lady Of Rage! Dunno what she did other than "afro puffs", but that's pretty good.

Also there was a woman on Redman's second album.. Hurricane G, who was pretty good on that, tho' I've never heard any of her solo stuff.

Nonchalant's "5 o clock in the morning" was all right & kinda different, tho' again I've never heard anything else by her.

My god - I actually remember that.

Did we mention Debbie Harry's rapping on rapture!

I rock ruff and tuff with my afro puffs [hey!] :D

Still drops big if you play it out!

Considering how long hip hop's been around, it's sad that it's so difficult to come up with more than a handful of names.

Most of these have already been mentioned, but I'd definitely nominate Shanté (-queen of the old school, without a doubt).

Er... Frick 'N' Frack... Jean Grae... T-Love...

Peaches (-more for lyrical content and attitude, than skill).

Missy is still all-conquering though.

Who was that lil' female rapper who worked with Public Enemy for a while?

Sister Souljah?

She was on PE's Apocalypse 91... The Enemy Strikes Black and Terminator X's Valley Of The Jeep Beats album from the same time.

I use to listen to an artist called Sweet Tee who was produced by Hurby love bug - same fella who did salt n pepa

I can't see past the queen bitch (her own words), Missy. She basically, with Timbaland, totally rewrote the modern day RnB landscape with "The Rain" and subsequently "Supa Dupa Fly". She shows no sign of letting up either. Many have followed her lead but there is no mistaking a Missy track when you hear her bark. She's not a bad singer either.

Left Eye was dead good too, although she was a little overshadowed for me by T-Boz's sexy as fuck gravel voice with TLC.

I was gonna say what? what?, but I have just discovered what? what? = jean grae. I did not know that.

"I thought it was my pancreas" :D

Anyone remember this? http://www.discogs.com/release/74776

Not exactly the best female rapper, but some of the tracks on this LP were very good and I used to spin them a lot back in the day (the ones which weren't were a bit too commercial/new jack swing-like for my liking); unfortunately she seemed to disappear without trace after this release.

And shame on you lot who mentioned Lady Sov and Shystie but not Nolay!!!!
<draws for the strap and waves to Zorra ;) > (personal in-joke ) ;)

slight derail: Tim Dog must be one of the worst male rappers ever, but his Michel'le diss, complete with Michel'le skits and squeaking was jokes :D

I've just done a track with Jamaican MC called Lady Posh
She's pretty good.
It's a remix of an old Ian Dury song about Sex and Drugs and Namibian Folk music or something;)

Damn...this post is a wayback machine to 1991. I looked down and I was wearing a CrossColors t-shirt and doorknocker earrings!

if you were talking female MCs / singjays whatever in dancehall, you'd be in luck.. Lady Saw, Tanya Stephens, Patra,

Yeah I though exactly the same - a massive amount of female lyrical talent there. But not quite rap I guess.

I recognize the sleeve, but I don't remember hearing it. (-Or maybe I've just forgotten hearing it.)

There'll always be room on the Technics for I Get Wrecked (with KRS-ONE) though! They both come off raw and furious on that. Relentless bassline too.

<but they are not ladies, so... derail over!>

Got it on a Myspace or anything ...?

Truth...I've only heard her stuff on the Run The Roads Com-pie-lations but Unorthodox Chick is a ace tune...one of those that makes me think I iz all hard and street and not some aging west country deluded bird who is never going to own a piece, nevermind use it...*sigh*

I also liked a girl called Baby Blue who was threatening to blow up about a year ago, but I don't really know what happened there...she's deffo worth checking out though.
