Facebook takes down white nationalist and fake antifa accounts

Apparently it's been a bit of a bot scattergun onslaught with loads of innocent casualties but I guess in every war etc etc,,,,,

Facebook Inc (FB.O) said Tuesday it has suspended accounts associated with white nationalist groups after some advocated bringing weapons to the current wave of anti-racist protests.

Company officials also said they removed accounts falsely claiming allegiance to antifa in order to bring discredit to the anti-fascist movement.

Antifa adherents have said they focus on defending people from attacks by authorities or vigilantes, but they have been vilified by President Donald Trump who, without citing evidence, said they were instigators of anti-police violence.

Loads of ska pages got taken down. I think our very own Nanker Phelge may have been a victim too.

Companies like Facebook really need to either train their moderation teams better. They do have them, but judging from articles I've read in the past, they are underpaid, overworked and lacking in support as well as training. They need to stop using fucking bots completely, way too many false positives.

If they can't do that, then their business model is not sustainable and they should close down.

I'll be honest, there are people on the scenes I would prefer not around, but fucking us all up is a drag, and it won't stop them coming out to play.

They don't give a shit. They're all about grabbing your data and making money.

I've no links to white nationalist groups or fake antifa pages but mine was disabled too. I do have some punk and skinhead group pages though.

Is that why the mrs said you were in fb jail? Thought I hadn’t seen you post recently and wondered what you had done that was so terrible. :D

In this calendar year I've lost 3 Twitter accounts I was admin for, my colleague lost her personal account, and a friend lost their group Twitter account - no warning, no opportunity to complain, no reason given, and above all no contentious content posted - unless you're a right wing prick, which suggests to me aggressive campaign of reporting against us.

Totally shocked how Twitter refuse to engage in this process. Im still quite angry about it. Its a situation out of control, and one of political censorship IMO.

Want photo ID to access the account, there's a list of documents you can provide.

They don't say they have to be real!!!
This is how I managed to keep my fake name. They kept holding out for a passport or driving licence, but their list (at the time) said any photo ID so I kept giving them some photoshopped ITV passes, and some ikea cards etc. Took about a month for them to accept me back. . . . then they immediately decided I was faking it again. I complained that I had provided them with everything they had asked for as and "were they calling me a liar?".

The fucking absurdity of using algorithms to identify and remove cultural and political content on social media.

The above image is a joke, but it's not too far from the truth.

The fucking absurdity of using algorithms to identify and remove cultural and political content on social media.

i was speaking to someone about this recently and they said the scale of number of accounts and malicious reporting meant it was impossible to do any other way

i agree its absurd

The people who write these algorithms aren't stupid. I'm sure their intent was to target more than far right accounts. Most likely anyone their algorithms considered could possibly be linked to any extreme groups, left or right.

Fucking bullshit, I'm not buying that for one nanosecond. Facebook is literally worth billions. Whoever told you that is either an idiot or is being deliberately dishonest. Facebook could easily afford to hire the necessary workforce to ensure that human eyes are laid on something at least once before it gets booted off the platform.

It's honestly disgusting when some of the most obscenely rich entities on the fucking planet plead poverty as an excuse not to do the right thing. It's the same when triple-AAA video game publishers claim that psychologically manipulative revenue-enhancing devices like lootboxes and microtransactions are necessary to in order to fund the development of modern games.

If it really is true that a business cannot properly operate without using shady, underhand and just plain shit practices, then that business should close down.

Which is still fucking stupid, because it's totally possible to "look" like one is extreme left or right while in actual fact being only mildly so, or apolitical. When this is combined with Facebook's undying hatred of properly communicating with its users, you get a whole bunch of perfectly innocent accounts getting banned, while the users concerned are left scratching their heads wondering what the fuck happened and why.

That was exactly my reaction...Twitter is "worth" $4billion according to a quick search....with income of £3billion in 2018...surely they could afford to hire some staff to deal with this? Well my friend reckons the scale of bots and bot attacks and malicious and honest reports and moderating is so enormous that it is an impossibility.
Id love to know for sure. I think this is an important topic that could do with some investigative journalism. Maybe such journalism already exists.

Not just triple-A either. I'd never really thought about lootboxes, but I guess they could be a bit shady when the algorithm is a black box.
