Well, hang onto your castanets, and de-moth your trajes de luces. If you don't have one of those, put some fairy lights on your jammies. It's the Spain Grand Prix.

Unlike Canada, Spain actually is in Europe, hence its appearance during the European rounds. Accordingly, the UK telly timings are civilised:

Fri 21 June
FP1 - 12:30
FP2 - 16:00

Sat 22 June
FP3 - 11:30
Qual - 15:00

Sun 23 June
Race - 14:00

I think a Spanish winner would go down pretty well with... everyone really, apart from the lacuna of grace squatting under the Red Bull signage.

Flavio Briatore is returning to F1

Flavio Briatore will return to Formula 1 in an advisory role for Alpine, the team owned by French carmaker Renault said Friday. Alpine made the announcement at the Spanish Grand Prix. The Italian businessman will have an “executive advisor” role, the team said. Briatore, 74, was the team principal at Benetton and Renault, the previous iterations of Alpine, in the 1990s and 2000s. Under his leadership, Michael Schumacher won championships in 1994 and 1995 for Benetton, and Fernando Alonso won the 2004 and 2005 titles under Renault.

Briatore left F1 after being found guilty of ordering Nelson Piquet Jr. to deliberately crash his car to help teammate Alonso win the Singapore Grand Prix in 2008. He was initially handed a life ban by governing body FIA but he took the matter to a French court and successfully overturned the punishment. When asked about the return of Briatore, Alpine team principal Bruno Famin said he “really didn’t mind the past. We are looking toward the future,” Famin said. “The target is to make the team better as soon as possible and having the knowledge and the network and influence of Flavio with us is an asset.”

Alpine has struggled this season, scoring just five points from nine races. The team said in May that it would part ways in 2025 with Esteban Ocon, the only driver to win a race for the team since it rebranded from Renault in 2020. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said he had no problem with Briatore’s comeback. “I have known Flavio as an extremely smart businessman with a lot of knowledge in Formula 1,” Wolff said. “He has a lot of experience and expertise, and I think that everyone deserves the opportunity to come back.”

Ferrari counterpart Frédéric Vasseur agreed, saying, “He has paid his price.” Briatore was also part-owner and chairman of English soccer club Queens Park Rangers from 2007-10.

Sounds like McLaren burnt the toast today... (Sky report before FP3.)

Apparently, they had an electrical fire in the hospitality emporium.

No injuries. Several peckish journalists spotted truffling out bacon sammies wherever they could find them.

:)

It’s getting rather good this year, the F1! Red Bull, McLaren, Ferrari and now perhaps even Mercs participating in a close fight. We haven’t had the luxury of such close competition between 4 teams in many years and now they will go and shake up the rules again in 2026 and probably have a single team dominate again

F1 driver’s ‘road rage’ stuns Anthony Davidson and Karun Chandhok

Sky Sports F1 pundits Anthony Davidson and Karun Chandhok were both left stunned during the final practice session for the Spanish Grand Prix by one driver’s ‘road rage’. The pinnacle of motorsport had one last 60-minute session to finalise preparing their cars to qualify on Saturday afternoon. Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz set the pace in FP3 for the Spanish GP. The 29-year-old topped the timing sheet at his home race with a fastest lap of 1:13.013. Sainz pipped McLaren rival and good friend Lando Norris to top the FP3 time sheet after the Briton’s 1:13.043 run. Less than one tenth of a second also separated the top four as Charles Leclerc (1:13.050) ran well in the sister Ferrari to pip Max Verstappen (1:13.087) of Red Bull.

Charles Leclerc’s ‘road rage’ at the Spanish GP stuns Anthony Davidson and Karun Chandhok
But while Leclerc set the third-fastest time in FP3 at the Spanish GP, the 26-year-old also stunned Davidson and Chandhok with the Ferrari driver’s ‘road rage’ against Norris. The Sky Sports F1 pundits’ shock at the six-time Grand Prix winners’ moment of madness was clear. Norris had kept to the inside through the kink of Turn 6 to let Leclerc take the racing line for the T7 braking zone. But the Monegasque aborted a push lap and cut straight in front of the McLaren driver. Leclerc’s chop inside even saw the rear of his Ferrari clip Norris’ front wing.

Davidson instantly reacted to the incident on Sky Sports F1 by claiming he saw some ‘road rage’. Chandhok even agreed with his colleague that the Scuderia star’s chop on Norris was clear ‘road rage’ and admitted, ‘I don’t understand what Leclerc has done there’. Upon seeing replays of Leclerc and Norris’ incident in FP3 at the Spanish GP, Davidson also added: “Wow! They did touch! He’s going to get a penalty for that.” Davidson also added “Lando pulls over to the side. Leclerc takes it, basically these drivers are taking matters into their own hands. They’re trying to show each other, ‘You don’t do that to me otherwise there’ll be consequences’.”

Lando Norris made every effort to avoid impeding Charles Leclerc in FP3
Leclerc clearly had a hot-headed moment under the sun at the Spanish GP as he needlessly chopped inside Norris. The pair are friends off the track but the Ferrari racer could not hide his frustration after feeling the McLaren star impeded his last push lap during final practice. But even if Norris had impeded Leclerc – which he arguably did not beyond leaving dirty air having left the Ferrari driver acres of tarmac – the Monegasque had no reason to drive in a dangerous manner and actually cause, albeit slight, contact with his McLaren counterpart.
