F1 2024

And now comes the race that really isn't. Monaco isn't remotely suitable for any vehicle bulkier than a Dinky toy. It's all about qualifying, followed by a parade of cars, at a pace leisurely enough for drivers to endorse luxury brands on the fly. Monaco is the venue that gave street circuits a good name, to F1's continuing detriment.

Still it offers a vista of billionaires' yachts crammed hugger-mugger into a bijou harbour, with a temporary influx of celebs and beautiful people, which keeps the telly director in a state of permanent tumescence over the weekend.

Telly times in the UK will be:

Fri 24 May
FP1 - 12:30
FP2 - 16:00

Sat 25 May
FP3 - 11:30
Qual - 15:00

Sun 26 May
Race - 14:00

Surely we can all give a balloon-lunged cry of support for this week's home-boy: "Allez, Leclerc, tu ne sors pas les poubelles!"

I love Monaco. Dont care. :p :D

Unfortunately I won't be there this year but we did get an invite again, just not feasible at the moment. Next year!

Oh, I can stand Monaco, it's pretty**, but it's just not a good race.

And now every jumped-up car park in some industrial blastscape thinks street circuits are acceptable. I blame Princess Grace.

** An old colleague, years ago, an ex-US Marine Major with 3 Vietnam tours under his belt used to call this oxymoron "Mackerel in the Moonlight". It's pretty but it stinks.

:D

Part 2 of the Monaco GP review by the yacht channel.

How much does it cost to dock in Monaco for the GP weekend? A few bob. About 35,000 euros.

Hamilton fastest in Monaco first practice

Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes set the pace from McLaren’s Oscar Piastri in Friday’s first practice session at the Monaco Grand Prix. Hamilton, who said he was hopeful of a more competitive weekend from Mercedes, was 0.029 seconds quicker than Piastri. The second Mercedes of George Russell was third, from McLaren’s Lando Norris and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.

Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso was sixth fastest, while Red Bull’s Max Verstappen appeared to be struggling in 11th place and 0.815secs off the pace. Verstappen was complaining about his car being “so loose over the bumps”, after warning on Thursday that he expected Monaco would be “one of the more difficult races”. However, he did not do a run on the soft tyres which most of those in front of him did.

The top five drivers were closely matched - Russell was just 0.126secs off the pace, while Leclerc in fifth was 0.228secs behind Hamilton, despite setting his fastest time on the medium tyres. But there was a 0.606secs margin to Alonso, as drivers concentrated on refamiliarising themselves with the tight Monaco street circuit and building confidence in their cars. Leclerc’s pace was particularly promising for Ferrari - given the tyre offset between the medium and soft, he looked the quickest driver in the field. He was also fastest on the hard tyre earlier in the session.

The session was briefly red-flagged with about 15 minutes to go to clear up some carbon-fibre debris left by Zhou Guanyu’s Sauber hitting the wall at Sainte Devote. The Chinese was able to continue back to the pits having apparently escaped with just a damaged front wing. Williams’ Logan Sergeant also came close to a crash, hitting the inside wall at the fast Massenet left-hander approaching Casino Square. But he, too, got away with it, somehow avoiding being catapulted into the barriers on the outside.

Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll, the RBs of Yuki Tsunoda and Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz completed the top 10.

Did anyone see the near collision in the tunnel? Was it an F2 practice?

Holy f*ck! The driver's reaction was the fastest change of direction I've seen in my life.

They just showed in on Sky - no link yet, but worth a look when it's available.

Norris handed sanction by Monaco stewards

Lando Norris has been hit with a reprimand from Monaco Grand Prix stewards after an incident with George Russell in practice. Exiting the tunnel, Norris was on a fast lap with Russell on a cool-down circuit, with the former aborting his lap after feeling he was blocked. After abandoning the attempt, Norris moved across and nearly made contact with Russell to "express his displeasure", according to the stewards.

Whilst the stewards felt the move was "not dangerous", they felt "this sort of action could potentially lead to a dangerous situation" and should be avoided. As a result, Norris was hit with a reprimand as no further action was taken against Russell. World champion Max Verstappen was also summoned by the stewards, again for an alleged breach of Article 33.4 of the Sporting Regulations, driving unnecessarily slowly - for which he received no penalty.
