Euro 2024

France, second favourites, look like qualifying on the strength of a single own goal.
Are teams playing so negatively because they are afraid of losing?

I was rooting for France but the Netherlands got absolutely dicked over there. Why did it take so long to reach a decision?

[TNT Sports] No player has created more chances than Trent for England at Euro 2024 so far. He’s yet to play a full 90 minutes

first comment on reddit:
The infuriating thing is: Kane, Foden, and Saka refuse to make runs in behind the defense. The one time Saka did, trent put in a killer ball that almost resulted in a goal. Then southgate in his infinite wisdom takes off trent for Gallagher and then decides its a great time to put in Watkins, Bowen, and Eze. And now those players are making runs in behind the danish defense and theres not one player skilled enough to put in a ball to send them through on goal.

As opposed to the rest of the team who've all been running rings round the opposition. If he can create chances - and he's the best passer/crosser in the team - then that's worth it on its own.

Hmm. Just smells like a bit of a bullshit stat because he’s lobbed a load of crosses in. He certainly isn’t the best passer. And he shouldn’t be in central midfield. Other than that… he’s fine!

Bellingham has been good in flashes but last game when he fell down after being dispossessed he looked petulant - like he wanted to just stay down while the play was going on round him.

I know it's a hostage to fortune to say it, but they might just be managing getting through the group which they've done. I wouldn't be surprised to see a few changes against Slovenia.

Kane

Gordon ----- Foden --- Bellingham ----- Saka

Rice --- Stones

Shaw ----- Guehi ----- Walker

Pickford

Stones in his hybrid CB / DM role, CB out of possession and taking up a midfield place with the ball to make the extra man. And if Shaw still isn't fit, Gomez rather than Trippier (makes it all the more ludicrous that Branthwaite and/or Colwill aren't in the squad).

Rice made some good interventions last match but did start to give the ball away.

Bringing on later I'd like to see Palmer given a chance - he's class. Grealish is good for close control and promising to get penalties by falling over if he gets in the box.

I'm happy to state the obvious but the squad and manager aren't going to change for Euro 24. If they improve and get to the latter stages, who knows?

I would:

--- ----- -Pickford

Walker - Stones - Guehi - Gomez

- --------- -Rice

- --- -TAA --- -Foden

--Bowen - ---- -Gordon

- -- -- - Bellingham

He might surprise us all by doing something drastic in the middle of a tournament, as this next game is his last chance. But, I think the most that will happen is Bellingham back next to Rice. Foden in the middle and probably Gordon on the left.

He's not going to suddenly start a new formation or a false 9.

He's cautious as fuck.

Think that would work better with this squad. Denmark and Serbia are respectable teams though. Semi-finalists last time? Most of the teams are handy. But trying to make it stick on Kane for most of the match is shit.

I’m firmly of the belief that it should be Rice in front of a sitting DM and I thought you tommers would be of the same inclination. As for Foden, I don’t think he’s as good as some would have you believe.

I also thought- for the first time - some of the hype seemed to have slightly gone to his head. He was trying too hard to boss the match and it wasn’t happening, lost the ball a few times overplaying it.

He can definitely get forward. Who would be the DM though? Or would Stones step into it? I dunno. I don't know whether Southgate can get them playing like that.

And yeah Foden has disappointed for two tournaments now. Well one and a bit.
